“very charming, but not well organized.”
Reviewed February 24, 2013

The receptionist was very nice and explained everything to us, we were supposed to leave car keys because parking space was very small and cars were parked one behind the other.
When we left to sight see the receptionist told us he left at 7 pm (when on the paper he had given us the time table said till 8 pm) and told us to take the room keys with us (car keys stayed behind). We assumed there would be someone at night to give us our car keys. When we arrived at 7.00 pm there was nobody there, the door was locked. We were going to need our car and our keys were in the office!
We did not know what to do!!! Luckily there was an emergency number, which we phoned and got immediate response from a very rude woman, who was not happy to get an emergency call. She was quick to bring the keys, but made us feel really guilty as if we were to blame for this misunderstanding. For the price one pays the service is not good, it is ridiculous that there is no one around and, the person on call should have a better attitude.
We stayed only one night, the breakfast was ok and the room was fine, but I insist that we paid the same rate we had paid at the wardolf astoria towers in New York a week before and got a nonexistent service in comparison

Randy was great at check in. We had perhaps the worst room location in the place - right up front, second floor, facing Duval street. The noise was horrible - especially the nightly garbage pick up at 4:30am, which lasted about 20 minutes. Before that, Duval street just generally roars. it might be a little quieter in the back rooms. Parking is a mess - our car was moved around as they needed to shuffle cars and getting into the spaces took a magician's touch. Thankfully no damage.

We had a swarm of what appeared to be termites on our bed our last evening; no help from the staff other than a vacuum to suck them up, and we wouldn't have had that if it had been after 8pm. We were told "it's Key West, the tropics"..... hmmm.

Breakfast is more limited than a Hampton - okay but nothing to get excited about. Room is small and old, cleanliness average. The pool area is nice, but small. Nothing is as fine as the pictures would lead you to believe. The mattress is shot.

There is a steel gate on the front porch that is supposed to lock at 8pm for security with access by combination. It never locked in our four night stay. We complained on our second day, but nothing changed before we left. Worse, our door lock was so insubstantial that you could open it with a pocket knife. So we were constantly concerned about security and the only safe is in the office, which isn't accessible from 8pm to 8am.

We had painters all over the place for several days and they were pretty messy - paint chips all over the porches and walk ways, drips everywhere, no wet paint signs and they didn't even stop when you had to walk under their ladders. I know it has to be done some time, but they sure don't accommodate their guests very well. Little sign of any management attention.

Room Tip: Be sure to get a room in the back of the property to get away from the Duval Street noise.

Good points - Location - Pool was nice
Bad points - Staff was non-existent
- Room wasn't anything like what was in the pictures
- AC was loud
- Bed was completely terrible
- Floor in the room wasn't even close to level which made the head of the bed on a downward slope.
- The mattress was totally worn out
- Room service never brought in any new coffee after the first day
- The place was being painted so taking a nap during the day was impossible with all the noise.
- The rates were not what they said they'd be. When we got back there were additional charges on our bill.

Ive stayed here on 3 occasions. A very pleasant, cozy and quaint inn. Lots of atmosphere. Three of the best restaurants in Key West just 50' away. Martin's was my favorite. The Yellow-tail Snapper was to die for! There are about 10 parking spots for half the guests. My only 2 Complaints are: for the Price the breakfast should include Eggs and Bacon !! Note: the BEDS here are Horrible and need to be replaced immediately ! PLEASE !!!

The location is one of the only positives of this place. The rooms are not clean and over all average at best. The beds/bedding is very old and uncomfortable. There are stray cats all over. The staff are very rude when you call or talk to them in person. The price may make this place seem like a gem but i would not recommend the Wicker Guesthouse to anyone.

Room Tip: Most rooms are loud.

We appreciate your feedback and sincerely apologize if our staff did not meet your expectations. We wish that you would have brought your concerns to our attention so that we may have researched and resolved them. Our guesthouse is located one block away from the Hemmingway House so we do receive some occasional five-toed (cat) visitors. Key West is known for its five-toed cats and roosters that roam the island. This is a part of our island and Key West charm!

To be sure its a "Guest House" in a very old facility and not a big chain hotel. Randy at the front desk was wonderful at check in giving info on the guest house and the Duval St area. Contental breakfast at the pool was a nice touch. The room we stayed in was poorly designed, cleaned and maintained. It was so small there was no room for a chair and there was no door between the shower area and the bedroom. The location was near the Hemmingway house and St Mary of the Sea church but that's all. Being away (a long 6 blocks) from the noisy Bar area is good I guess but also far from restaurants, the docks for sunset cruises and Mallory Square. If we were to return to Kwy West, we'd search for another place to stay.

Room Tip: Stay away from the pool area that has spearkers for music and is open 24 hours and away from the air...

We were delighted to hear that Randy was helpful during your stay! He is a great asset to our front desk team and is always willing to assist guests to ensure that they have a memorable stay. The Wicker Guesthouse has several room types available. Rooms types start with the most economical room type which is a small room with a queen size bed to deluxe rooms with king beds that are larger with sitting areas in them. We recommend upgrading your room type so that you have a larger nicer room during your next stay
