We've only been home a few hours, but I wanted to write this review while the particulars were fresh in my mind.
We booked 3 rooms (3 couples) for this past week, including New Year's Eve/Day, based primarily what we had read on tripadvisor.com. None of the 6 of us ever had been to Key West, but we knew we wanted to be off Duval (yet able to walk or bike to it) in a small hotel with a classic Old Key West feel. We knew in advance this was going to be a bit pricey, being the holidays, but Eden House exceeded every expectation.
At check-in, each guest is offered a complimentary 12 oz. can of liquid refreshment; after that, they're a buck a can. Each room was given a voucher for a cup of coffee and a fresh-baked croissant from the Old Town Bakery (worth the very short walk!) Great coffee, iced tea, and hot water (with tea and cocoa) are available in the lobby 24/7. Also ready for your no-charge use: daily newspapers, menus from a ton of restaurants, maps and brochures, yoga mats, sunscreen and bug spray. Guests enjoy a serve-yourself Happy Hour daily by the pool and a basket of apples and oranges in the lobby every morning. Pool towels are abundant. We rented the sturdiest bikes I've ever seen for 3 days for $25 (each bike). We printed our airline boarding passes the night before we left in the "business center"/library.
Each room is delightfully unique, so it's hard to say that all the rooms do or don't have something. Many have a microwave and mini-fridge. Some have porches (some with swings), some have decks or balconies. Most have private bathrooms, but you can get some with shared facilities. Those rooms with private baths seem to come equipped with dispensers of shower gel, shampoo and conditioner mounted right in the showers (not the best quality I've experienced, so you may want to bring your own).
What every room does NOT have: A phone and a hairdryer. Bring your cell (you will anyway) and get a travel hairdryer, if that sort of thing is important to you on vacation. There ARE a few hairdryers that can be "signed out," and the front desk staff will call you a taxi, make a dinner reservation for you, call about a tour availability -- whatever. We are very grateful to Laura, Connor, Fritzie and the other staff who made our stay so incredibly enjoyable. We are sorry we didn't get to meet Mike Eden; he seems like a colorful character...!
- Official Description (provided by the hotel):
- Relax In Old Town Key West! The Eden House's first priority has been to maintain a clean inn, offer a comfortable bed, reasonable rates and have a staff that cares. Next comes the heated pool and Jacuzzi, hammocks, porch swings, waterfalls, sundeck, free off-street parking, café and lush gardens. We will have a cold drink for you at check-in and our daily complimentary 'happy hour' is poolside. Then at 10 PM we will dim the lights and let you get a good nights rest. Our night staff will not put a mint on your pillow but they will walk the grounds to insure that you won't be disturbed. I have owned and managed the Eden House for 27 years. I like to think that my staff and me do the 'little' things that will make your stay in Key West a memorable one. Key West is notorious for it's nightlife. Whether it is a sunset sail, a snorkel or kayak trip or deep water and flats fishing, the waters of the Florida Keys are like no other. Just let us know when you want to go.Grab a good book and a drink and I'll see you in the hammock area. ... more less
