Casa Marina Key West, A Waldorf Astoria Resort
Ranked #40 of 51 Hotels in Key West
Reviewed June 16, 2011

We stayed here June 9-14 and I can honestly say it was everything I had hoped it would be. The grounds and amenities are first rate, but what makes it special is the staff. The guys at the pool and beach are so friendly and helpful that you feel like one of the family. The service is great, but their attitude is even better. Every staff member greets you, which is amazing, since for years I was GM at a large resort and know how difficult that is to accomplish. My son called one day as I was lounging on the beach drinking a pina colada, and he said if I sounded any more relaxed, I'd need to be resuscitated. And while there, do yourself a favor and book a massage on the beach with Livia. It's expensive, but WOW, totally worth it. I have chronic pain and have been doing massage therapy for years, and she knocked my socks off (well, they were already off, but you get the idea). Really. Do it.

The resort is several blocks from Duval St., but easily walkable, and if you poop out there's always a pedicab or taxi close by. Beware the pedicabs though, they're spendy.

Casa Marina gets four thumbs up from us.

Room Tip: Room 330 has a view of the beach and pool.

We went to Key West and South Beach to celebrate my 50th birthday. The Casa Marina Resort was excellent. It was very busy but the staff did a great job accomodating it's
guests. The rooms are very nice and the bed was comfortable. Awesome beach area with the bar close by for drinks and food. I can not rave enough about how amazing the Island is and everywhere we went was a memorable experience. Our overall experience with Casa Marina was great!

Overall, we loved our stay at Casa Marina. The nicest beach and pool area in Key West –an island which has almost no beach except on Atlantic side. While not on top of Duval Street, it is walkable to it. A shout out to Mark, Will and Patrick at the pool. We have never had better attention or more pampering at a beach resort. All day, they keep on bringing out to everyone surprise “treats”: ice water, drink of the day, popsicles, cool cucumbers for your eyes, chilled lotion, frozen scented wash cloths, cleaning your glasses and on and on! Amazing.
Beautiful water and fabulous beach setting, very good food – dine at Sun Sun with your feet in the sand and very nice breakfast. Beautiful lobby and beach, azure warm ocean - no waves due to coral reef.
I was however, very disappointed with the room. I have no idea how they could have a four diamond rating from anyone – the rooms are simply sub-par. Old bathroom with, weird stall shower with half glass (spotted and never cleaned), and half beige shower-curtain and sloppily patched broken tile floor , Everything looks shabby, beat, and soiled…..grimy swich plates, stains on the ceramic floor and furniture, they change the linens and mop the tile floor but not much else. I doubt the room is ever thoroughly cleaned and the décor is light – yes, but dismal and dull.
I don’t get how a cardboard box wrapped in dirty beige muslin is an attractive piece of wall art or lighting fixture. We paid quite a bit for an upgraded ocean view and saw nothing but the top of a palm tree – so don’t bother. Also, skip the fourth floor – third or second probably better – the top floor has a higher cement barrier and obscures the view even more from your balcony. Separating our balcony from neighbors was more of the soiled beige muslin/canvas stuff they love in this place. Also – the rooms do not all have interior corridors and your entry overlooks a roof and what looks like a prison courtyard. No effort at all made to obscure or dress this up even a little bit.
The hallways in the rooms that do have interior corridors are dark, soiled carpet, and smell moldy, damp and musty. You do have to realize that this is an older historic property as the front desk explained – but that has nothing to do with housekeeping or decorating.
The elevator leading to our room always had dirt, food and spills on the floor and stained and rusted stainless steel doors. No one at the hotel seems to stay on top of this. They seem too busy doing other things.
It seems that hotel management stresses the services at the pool which are stellar – but no one pays attention to running a tight ship with housekeeping – no one suggests tips to these people – whereas tip suggestions to all the other staff are quite evident. Therefore, housekeeping people have no real incentive to do anything extra and have no role-models or standards to keep as I have come to expect in a four diamond property.
We had just come from the Conrad hotel in Miami which is also a four diamond Waldorf Astoria property by Hilton – that had a spotless and beautiful room and new marble baths plus shower. Two hotels, same chain, same rating, worlds of difference.
We were told that the Casa Marina recently completed an 80 million renovation – not sure where they spent it – if it was on the hotel rooms , décor – they sure got ripped off.
The status of the room condition and housekeeping is not likely to change much since they seem to be 100% occupied per the gentleman at the desk I complained to when I wanted a room change. They average seven weddings a week and have loads of business meetings and events hosted there which we observed. I am sure they make quite a bit of money from this. These events can actually feel a bit intrusive and even annoying,. On Sunday, when we were relaxing on the beach they started setting up buffet tables right in front of us at the ocean edge around the middle of the day. However, bottom line, if you want to stay in Key West and also want a beautiful and expansive ocean front and beach setting with lots of amenities – this is really your only choice. The one other option might be to stay at the Reach – the sister property about a block away (separated by another property). That is newer and PERHAPS rooms are nicer (you'd have to check that out)– the guests of each property have priveleges at the other resort.
In spite of my gripes about the room, I would likely return and overlook much because we loved the overall Key West experience– it is a fun vacation and destination with lots of water sports, great snorkeling and many good restaurants. Oh look, there’s a chicken! I did my own cleaning. Hopefully the management will hear these complaints and get someone in charge of housekeeping who CARES about it and add in a bit more sparkle and clean and elbow grease, scrub that floor and clean the shower glass daily and put in new baths, etc etc.
One more thing - high speed or low speed internet did not work most of the time in our room. After several complaints - they got it working - but very slow.

Room Tip: if ocean view - try to get 2nd or 3rd floor i

Amazing resort, highly recommended!! Please see Jake, Patrick, and Mark beachside. They are the best ever. Jan and Darrin at the bar are wonderful mixologists...yes I said mixologist..because they make some seriously delicious drinks. Jafre and Stephanie at the front desk was super accommodating and really made us feel welcome and special. The staff here overall is A++++++++++++++. I will forever rave about Casa Marina and when I come back to Kew West, there is no way I am staying anywhere else. (Truth.). Love you Casa!!! Till next time....

Room Tip: Oceanview all the way.

We stayed at this beautiful resort for a week to celebrate our ten year wedding anniversary. The Cons: We arrived around 2:30 and were told that housekeeping was cleaning what would be our room so there would be a small wait. No problem...however, we were not given our room keys until over 2 hours later. This has happened to us once before on a vacation at a different resort and they treated us to a free drink at the bar which was a nice touch. Housekeeping was also nearly non-existent during our stay. Our bed was made every day and that's truly it.
The Pros: Food was fabulous! We ate poolside every day of our stay and every meal was fantastic. Yes, it's expensive but most high end resorts are. The quality of the dishes prepared was wonderful and the service top notch. Service on the beach was just as good- great group of guys will make sure you are cool and comfortable all day long. The will clean your sunglasses, bring you cool treats and give you great recommendations for fun in Key West. Service at the poolside bar was also top notch.
Bottom line- this place excels in everything outdoors...indoors, there are some things to work on. We would go back but will try other resorts as well.

We took the Key West Express from Ft. Myers for an overnight trip to Key West. When we arrived our rooms were not ready (it was 1130am) so we put on our bathing suits and went to the pool. The adult beverages and food were fabulous! There were two pool areas located on their little beach area. Hammocks between the trees and ample chairs for everyoone on the beach. If you want to swin in the ocean, you have to enter from a pier as just off the beach you have the coral reef. Snorkling from the little pier is great!

Once we got our rooms, we were pleasantly suprised that the rooms were done in a kind of contemporary motif, but not over the top considering this is an amazing old hotel. The room was spacious and well appointed. Everything seems to be top of the line.

We really enjoyed it and would go back in a hearbeat!

Casa Marina was an exceptional resort property that completely exceeded our expectations. Many sites' photos are deceptive, but Casa Marina is actually more beautiful than even its photos depicted. Its palm-tree lined beach was more extensive than we imagined. It was well-manicured daily and featured hammocks between shady palm trees. The beach staff provided superb service. Friendly staff quickly hustled to set up beach chairs with towels and umbrellas. They continuously circulated bringing various free refreshments (drink-of-the-day, frozen face towels, popcycles, ice water, etc.).

Almost every room faces the ocean which is less than fifty yards away. Rooms, though compact, are renovated with ceramic tile floors, new furnishings, flat screen televisions, and in-room expresso maker.

The restaurant and outdoor cafes served excellent fresh meals moderately priced. A bountiful breakfast buffet featuring fresh fruit, an omelet bar, pastries, cheeses, waffles, eggs, breakfast potatoes, bacon & sausage was a bargain at $20. Dining was available indoors or outside amidst well-landscaped gardens and pools. It was a tropical paradise. Food servers were quite friendly and provided good service. The weekend featured an authentic steel drum player serenading with tropical island music.

The location is on the southern end of the island with one of the few true beaches available on Key West. It is 6-8 blocks from Duval Street. We have traveled much of the Carribean and have found few resorts any better than Casa Marina. It was truly one of the most relaxing vacations we have ever had. We will definitely return to Key West just to enjoy this resort!

Room Tip: Almost every room is ocean front !!!
