This is literally an open shack on Duval Street, but they have an unbelievably good red conch chowder and the only food place in Key West that I know of that has lobster rolls and whole belly clams. They have two bar stool type tables facing Duval street where you can watch the folks stroll by, and a yard in back with some bar tables. Not fine dining, but wonderful food and lots of character. We always have lunch here at least once while we are in Key West. This last time, we were the first patrons of the day. We stood outside waiting for them to open. The food is that good.

I grew up in New England, and even spent a summer as a kitchen manager in one of the largest high-end seafood restaurants up there. It is near impossible to find real Ipswich (belly) clams in Florida, and when you do, they are frequently either over-breaded or over-fried. DJ's has it down. The clams are cooked lightly and hot enough not to be greasy. I got them served in a cardboard cone, on top of a bed of fries.

But then there is the Lobster Roll. You are not going to find a better one anywhere much south of Cape Cod, and you would have to search pretty hard around those parts to come up with a match. The bun itself sets it apart. Not some thin basic hot dog bun, this is a really well made roll, buttered and grilled brown on both sides, before being stuffed with what seems to be about a half a lobster worth of meat. If that is not enough, you can always order the over-stuffed roll, but you better be really hungry.

I also tried the lobster bites this trip. Small to mid-sized pieces of lobster, breaded and fried like the clams. The only thing that I wished for was decadent drawn butter to dip them in. They were delicious with just lemon and a dash of salt.

[Hint: they have a quiet back patio where they will bring out your food, and you can avoid the noise of Duval Street.]

I had a terrible experience this weekend at this nasty place. It was one of the participating restaurants in this year's Key West Food and Wine Festival and half way through the event, they decided they didn't want to participate anymore. There was still more than 2 hours left in the event and the manager just said "we aren't doing it anymore...it's over." This was AFTER they agreed to all the terms and conditions of being a participant in the event and they even got paid for the event. The nasty manager even told me to go find another participating location and I asked him why they quit in the middle of the event giving wine and appetizers to the people who bought a ticket (for $85 by the way) and he said he just didn't "want to do it anymore." If this is how these people do business, I strongly recommend you don't eat there or you are likely to get the same treatment.

Due to location on Duval, we figured it wouldn't be that great because they don't have to be. With that many tourists and party-ers walking by, they could throw out any old food. Instead, we were pleasantly surprised at the ipswich fried clams - very tender, and the conch fritters - well cooked and different spices than other places. Front porch is great for people watching but extra space in the back as well.

DJ's lobster rolls are jammed with fresh lobster meat and served in the traditional New England hot dog bun. The rolls are pricey but worth it. Delicious!
