“A Haven”
Reviewed May 31, 2009

My wife and I stayed here for four nights at the end of May and can honestly say that it is because of the Tropical Inn that we came to love Key West.

It is not often that you experience in real life the quintessential family-run inn - and when you do, more often than not it is simply a euphemism for amateurish. How not the case at the Tropical Inn. You know you are on to a winner when the guide that comes with your room is a better source of info than the "Lonely Planet" guide you paid good money for.

But that was only the icing on the cake - everything was just perfect - the room, the breakfasts, the pool, the other guests even! There is no question we will stary there again when we retrun and I guess there is no higher recommendation than that, is there?

My husband and I were married in Key West and spent the last 3 days of our honeymoon at the Tropical Inn. We stayed at a large hotel on the ocean for the first half of our trip and wanted to switch it up for the last half.

Wow, wow, wow!! I was so impressed by this little gem. We arrived and were greeted by Brandi who immediately congratulated us on our marriage. How thoughtful! I never said anything to her about it, but must have mentioned it when booking our room. I was impressed that they remembered this detail. Brandi walked us through the garden/ pool area to our room and I was immediately transported into tranquility.

We stayed in the Gecko room and it was wonderful. The furnishings and decor were top notch. Our bathroom was spacious and had 2 sinks and a very nice ceiling fan. Also, we had two shower heads. Yes, two! One was a hand held massager, the other was a gigantic rainfall shower head that was attached to the ceiling. Glorious. Our bed was the most comfortable of all of the rooms that we stayed in on our trip (and we stayed in 4 different places) The sink in our bedroom was really beautiful also. It was a tile/mosaic style. Really pretty!

Every morning we planned on going to breakfast and changed our minds when we saw the amazing gratis breakfast spread. On two days, we even woke to find homemade breakfast quiche (prepared by Jane, one of the owners). There was also an array of fruits, cheeses, breads, bagels, juices, and coffee. Where else would you get all of this hospitality?

The pool area was nicely manicured and there was lots of foliage and beautiful flowers surronding us. Also, I loved that the inn had a selection of lotions, sunscreens, and insect repellents available for use by the pool area- what a great idea.

We also had our own parking space which I'm sure went with the room we booked. This could not have been more convenient! If parking is a concern for anyone, I suggest that you ask about options when booking your room.

We will definitely stay at the Tropical Inn again. A local recommended it, and in Key West, you should always ask the locals!

This inn is truly a gem!! The location is perfect for enjoying everything Key West has to offer but without all the noise. The pool and tropical garden areas are so peaceful and quiet (not to mention lush) that you forget you are just steps from Duval St. Brandi, Jane, and Allen are so nice and willing to do anything they can to help make your stay perfect. We couldn't have asked for anything more and will definitely be staying there next time we go to Key West.

This was a nice little tropical inn on Duval, maybe the kind Mario Sanchez drew a couple of times. The room was nice and charming, had nice french doors that opened right up to the backyard and pool area. My only problem was upon returning one night, my set of keys didn't work to get into the front entrance of the locked building. Found out the next day that the set i was given and took with me for the evening had two room keys on the ring. Whatever, we got into our room without having to have anyone come down, but it was still a bit of an inconvenience. They charge $15 for parking a block away. There were also a few fruit flies all over the breakfast buffet station. Otherwise it was a nice quiet little place.

While we don't think this would be perceived as a particularly negative review, we do want to make sure that readers know that all items on our breakfast bar -- which is served on the back porch for guests' enjoyment of the garden -- are securely under cover. It's hard to avoid critters here in the tropics, and the canteloupe may have been irresistable to a fruit fly or two, but they would have had a hard time getting to it. Thanks, Richard, for the review! We hope to see you again soon!

The Tropical Inn and Key West experience was exactly what we needed to rejuvenate our spirits....Lots of fun and relaxation--an environment away from stressful jobs. Our hosts were wonderful, catering to our every need. Our room was small but clean and cute with lots of character. Although being right smack in the middle of busy Duval Street, our tropical garden oasis out back, where we relaxed with gin and tonics and had our delicious breakfast each morning was a quiet retreat and provided opportunities for private midnight swims. One early evening we people watched on the upper front porch with cocktails and walked a short distance to Mangoes, which by the way, I would recommend highly. Mallory Square is also easily reached by a short walk to catch a sunset. The half-day sail, snorkle, kayac trip by Danger was also great! Fort Zackary Beach a couple of blocks away is probably the nicest beach at Key West and on your stroll back, stop at the Green Parrot. Also the tour at Hemmingway's House is informative and enjoyable. Also recommended is Blue Heaven.......go for the yellow snapper. I came back to work refreshed and glowing. The Tropical Inn is a definite repeat experience........MaryAnn & Rob......

Would recommend walking, biking, or moped as means of transportation. Don't miss the sunset celebration in Mallory Square. If you enjoy history check out the train tour, Hemingway House, or the ghost tour. As far as dining, check with a local for recommendations.

The owners are extremely helpfull. It is wise to plan dinning and sightseeing based upon their advice and knowledge of Key West.
Pay the $15 a day parking fee. Street parking is hard to find.
