Was just passing by on our way to Smathers but I think it was the most beautiful beach I have ever seen. So blue and sand so soft. Perfect in an island where beaches arent plentiful.

Free parking at this beach, sand is great, hopefully you like seaweed and coral, because the water sucks. Remember, if you are going to Key West, the beaches are not the best.

“Pretty Beach, Interesting Beach Goers”
Reviewed June 22, 2013 via mobile

Beach and water were beautiful. Pier nice as well. Free parking. Went to check out the beach before dinner and went for a walk.

Parents of children should know that there are topless sun bathers at the beach. Not that there is anything wrong with that, but just need to be in the know.

“Key West's best beach.”
Reviewed June 19, 2013

I don't understand why anyone would complain about Higgs, but thanks to them, the beach is almost always empty when we're in town, which is PERFECT! Our kids love this beach. The parking is free, there are showers and restrooms within a few feet from the sand, it doesn't get very deep and there's a partial seawall that instills some peace of mind while we're all in the water. Yes, there are two pavillions that the homeless frequent, but there is no alcohol allowed on the beach, so it's not like anyone is rowdy. We usually setup a tent, the kids play in and out of the water, skimboard, make sandcastles and enjoy the entire day in the sun. The water is deliciously warm and mostly clear. If it's rained, don't expect crystal clear waters, it'll be cloudly. We've seen the pretty and not-so-pretty Higgs beach but the same goes for all of the beaches on the island. Clarity depends solely on the weather. My husband took the kids to the back seawall to snorkel and they saw tons of fish, a nurse shark and a few barracuda all living along the wall. So yes, there will be small, curious fish bumping into you if you're standing or floating still. They're not going to bite you or eat your leg, they're wondering what you're doing in their house. It IS the ocean!! In our experience, this beach beats out Ft. Zachary and Smathers, hands down. We look forward to a few relaxing days there every year.

“Calm, shallow, pretty water!”
Reviewed June 17, 2013 via mobile

This beach is small but Key West has smaller so it's a viable option. My 8 yr old loves all the shallow water and the water is nice and calm. There is a restaurant right there on the beach and also a hut to rent chairs/umbrellas. Kids and adults can be seen jumping off the low pier and as far as marine life, there are fish (did not see spectacular colorful fish though like at some other beach snorkeling destinations in the Keys) and we spotted a ray swimming by! Overall, this is my son's favorite beach on Key West and certainly a good stop for families with young children!!
