This house was the home of Hemingway, although he spent most of his time in Cuba where he was not besieged by tourists like us. There are many interesting period photographs and posters with very useful background descriptions. During our visit we overheard some of the presentations by 3 official guides. Two of them were nearly incomprehensible and we felt that elocution lessons for them would not go amiss. Visitors may stroll around on their own in both the garden and the house and the only restriction imposed on them is a request not to pick up any of the numerous cats which are the successors of the original cats, distinguished by the unusual feature of having 5, or in some cases 6, toes.

Thank you for your review.

You are correct, Hemingway lived 19-20 years in Cuba (1939-1959) and owned this home 1931-1939, but wrote 70% of his lifetime works here in Key West, in this home.

Thank you for commenting on the useful background descriptions supporting the photographs and posters, that is one of my more recent accomplishments in the projects I undertake here.

Thank you for your comments about the tour guides. Unfortunately, we do get comments from time to time about the clarity and volume of the tour presentations needing a little improvement, we are working on those issues.

We are fortunate in our ability to allow our guests to tour the inside of the home. I just returned from Cuba last night and the Hemingway Home there does not allow guests inside of the home, you can only look through the opened windows.

At the Hemingway Home in Cuba the cat population has drastically diminished, I actually saw two cats during my visit last Saturday. Again, we are fortunate to be able to portion out a more than adequate percentage of our admission fees to perpetually support the world-famous polydactyl (six-toed) cats and keep that legacy alive and very well cared for here.

Being an expat in Tuscany I am sure you have some interest in Hemingway's day in Paris and the "Lost Generation" that was the generation that came of age during World War I. The term was popularized by Ernest Hemingway, who used it as one of two contrasting epigraphs for his novel, The Sun Also Rises. In that volume Hemingway credits the phrase to Gertrude Stein, who was then his mentor and patron.

My wife and I visited the Hemingway house in November. Not a huge fan, but I am quite sure if you enjoy Hemingway you'll enjoy this place. Very well maintained and the guides clearly enjoy this place.

Thank you very much Matt for your excellent 5-star review!

We are happy to hear that you found your visit here to be interesting and informative. We will certainly pass along your comments to Chris, he is one of our very best tour guides.

The six-toed (polydactyl) cats are always an added treat and provide even more photo opportunities when visiting the estate. They also provide an insight to Ernest's softer human quality in his love and caring for his felines.

As you may know, Hemingway spent many boy-hood summers vacationing at his parent’s second home at Walloon Lake in your home-state of Michigan. From those summer experiences he gained the inspiration to write the Nick Adams series. It is great to have that connection through Hemingway with the great state of Michigan.
