We stayed on the bottom floor right next to the pool and it was nice and quiet. The room had a rustic, but romantic feel to it. We parked our jeep and never touched it the rest of the week. It is not a luxury hotel, but Key West is not a luxury island. It is for the people who just want to relax. I would stay there again without any reservations.

Although this hotel is well-located for the attractions of Key West, we were very disappointed. For $173 a night, this was our experience in Room # 4. This appeared to be the only room without a rug or a four poster bed. The wooden floor was sticky and sandy and very unpleasant on bare feet. The room was small and tired with outmoded light fixtures. The louver door to the bathroom was coated with 1/8" of dust. It has a "stick-on" hook which was broken off. The service personnel did not replace the shampoo, did not empty the ice bucket, or leave a clean bag for ice. No luggage rack. Wi-fi erratic, worked sometimes, but disconnected without reason. Swimming pool very small; you could only soak in it, not swim. Breakfast was OK, coffee, bagels, toast, yogurt, apples. Two nice cats. Parking on local streets only. But we would not recommend this hotel to anyone.

Beautiful rooms, great facilities. Centrally located to all the fun on Duval. Staff was wonderful and rooms are quiet, clean, updated, and well worth your money.

I just stayed at the Merling Guesthouse over the weekend. I drove to Key West and had a car with me. Upon check-in we asked for parking and the concierge let us know there was a "perfect spot" waiting for us around the corner. We drove to said "perfect spot" and there was a car parked there illegally... we go back to the front desk and ask for an alternative parking spot and were met with: "Well, there's nothing we can do about a car taking your spot. Your options are to park in a residential parking spot where you can be ticketed $35 per day or park at a real estate office down the street (with clearly visible tow away zone signs) and hope you don't get towed." We drove around for 2 hours looking for legal parking to no avail. The rooms are TINY and the bed is SO UNCOMFORTABLE that it will make your back hurt for days (I've never had back problems). That evening we "met" our next door neighbors when they were throwing heavy objects at their wall and when we asked them to keep it down, they decided to barrade us with insulting slurs and violent threats over the wall. Needless to say, we did not sleep that night. In the morning when I let our concierge know about what happened... she looked up their reservation and looked at the name and signature and said: "well, that's not a trutworthy signature is it? She let us know that they would be checking out that morning, laughed and brushed it off.
This was a terrible experience. I would not recommend anyone stay at this hotel.

I have been staying at the Merlin for 22 years under several management regimes. Under corporate ownership it has definitely lost something...not as caring/concerned for longtime loyal customers. Corporate atmosphere has replaced family atmosphere. That said, I keep staying there because it has enough left of the reasons I stayed the first time in 1988: Fair value (if you want budget, get a chain hotel,. but really, In Key West?)...good location, decent rooms. Parking is a bit of an issue, scarce or hit and miss, and more difficult now that Petronia is one-way. But it's free. Plus, I love Jordan (the house cat).

The staff was warm, genuine, and very helpful with everything from selecting a room to finding a great place for dinner. The room was beautiful! Comfortable bed and a private balcony overlooking the pool and Old Town. I'll stay there every time I get down to Key West!
