What a wonderful spot right on the water! The Ocean Key Resort is very nice. The front desk staff is so nice, very helpful and the valet is the best! The concierge is also excellent. The rooms are a bit worn and the bathrooms lack water pressure! The shower was one of the worst I have ever experienced. And what is it with hotels and NO towel racks?? The bed was so comfortable and the view from the room was sensational. The resort is so well located and easy to walk everywhere.

Love, love, love the Ocean Key Resort. Perfect location. Beautiful rooms. Nice pool & cabana bar. Lovely, lovely staff. The only thing that kept this from being a "5 dot" rating is the water closets in most rooms (I've seen & stayed in many of them) need some attention. Replace those low flow toilets and fix the walls properly where repairs have been made. There's no reason to skimp on such little things. Attention to detail counts.

Having said that, this trip, we stayed in a 5th floor, ocean view suite (#510). Huge vaulted ceiling in the sitting room looking out over the jet ski rental and sunset pier. We had a beautiful balcony. The sitting room (with a dining table & 4 chairs) allowed for plenty of entertaining space (which we needed as we were hosting guests). There is also a pass through to a fully equipped kitchen that they will unlock for you if you request it. The kitchens have not been fully renovated (still sporting those vintage white cabinets w/ wood trim), so they are kept locked. By requesting them to be opened, you accept what you're getting. However, other than dated cabinets, our kitchen was fine. All newish (white) appliances that worked well, plus basic dishes, utensils, coffee maker... Who cares about white cabinets!
In this particular suite the bedrooms are not equal in size or view. One is small and looks over the walkway, the other is huge with a water view & Jacuzzi tub. You're probably not going to be spending a lot of time in your bedroom (most people don't come to Key West to hang out in their rooms), so this probably won't matter. However, if you're looking for a suite with 2 like-sized bedrooms, ask for one of the -09 suites (ie, 209, 309...).
The pool & cabana bar are great. Big hot tub & comfortable pool. There are covered cabanas for those who want to stay out of the sun and the staff is happy to move umbrellas around if requested. They even have foam "pool noodles" for your floating enjoyment! The real winner here is the cabana bar. Great drinks & bartenders who know how to keep you happy! Good food also can be ordered poolside.
Tin Roof Restaurant is a great breakfast or lunch spot overlooking the water. I honestly haven't been there for dinner.
Finally, I can't say enough good things about Nate, the Concierge. He found an excellent fishing charter for our group with very little notice. Our friends caught so much fish, they actually came back early! His restaurant recommendations are also spot on! Sent us to a spot where they prepped and served our freshly caught fish for a very reasonable rate!
I wouldn't necessarily call this a "family friendly' hotel, but just because I don't think Key West is a "family appropriate" place. If there is language you don't want your children to hear, or things you aren't ready to explain, then perhaps it's best to wait until they are of legal age to bring them. Adults though will have a blast at this beautiful, perfectly located resort.

Room Tip: Ocean front rooms are overlooking the pool as well as the ocean. Expect pool noise and afternoon su...

We spent 4 nights at the Ocean Key Resort. I selected this hotel because of the coupon on tripadvisor. But upon checkout they informed me that the coupon was for $100 a day, and did not accumulate so although I thought I would have a $400 credit- NOT SO!! It's per day so it only applies to that day's charges. I went to the spa & had breakfast at the resort on the same day so it only covered $100 for that day. It didn't matter that I didn't charge anything the next day so I only received a $200 credit instead of $400. If they would have explained the coupon when I presented it at check-in then I would have known to make sure I didn't exceed the $100 limit per day!! There was not even any fine print on the coupon that clarified that little disclosure. They had no problem explaining the rules upon checkout but conveniently nothing was said upon check in. It's a way they can squeeze out a few extra bucks out of their customers!! I won't be returning to the Ocean Key the next time I visit Key West. I will choose one of the other hotels that were comparable in price & location.

My famiily and I have stayed at this resort twice, and one of the many reasons we love it so much is because it's located right in the middle of the action. We've stayed at numerous other properties in Key West, including motels and bed and breakfasts, but this has quickly become our favorite. Traveling with our two children, ages 11 and 9, we stay in the very roomy one bedroom suite overlooking Duval Street. We had a partial view of the water from our large balcony. The bathroom is luxurious, with two sinks and a deep jetted tub. I would also highly recommend dining al fresco at Ocean Key's on-site restaurant, Hot Tin Roof. The food is outstanding, and you can sit outside and take in the gorgeous views.

Room Tip: The one bedroom suite is very large. It's perfect if you're traveling with children.

We stayed for 5 nights in late Jan 2013. We had scoped out the resort the year before on a prior trip to Key West, and the only thing I was concerned about was the price. However there are lots of benefits to be staying at 0 Duval St. You would be right on the ocean. You can walk to a lot of the attractions, and not worry about drinking and driving. After all the main attraction - Duval st and Mallory Square - is at your doorstep. You can cross the road to hop on one of the tourist trains, and there is the Sunset Pier, and all kinds of other restaurants and bars within walking distance. Not that you can still use a car for the other, further attractions. And you can buy a ticket and hop on one of the cruise boats (the little ones, not the huge ones that dock slightly further away.
If you want to walk Duval St I think it would be about 20 or 25 minutes one way, but will take you a lot longer as you will probably want to stop at a lot of the places- bars, shopping, restaurants, etc.
Obviously the cost of your room is dependent on the time of year, weekend or non weekend, number of days, size and the location (garden view, partial ocean view, full ocean view, etc). In our case we chose a partial ocean view and got lucky. We got a view of Mallory Square, some of the ocean liners docked, and even a partial view of Sunset Key Island, otherwise known as Tank Island, which also has a number of guest cottages and private residences.
I think our room was the Junior Suite. Luxurious as described on their web site, it was not. In fact it was tired. The sofa had some questionable stains. It really needed a steam clean. The bathroom, although clean had cracked floors and a cracked basin. The bed linens were clean and the mattresses were very comfortable. We did have a small balcony, and at one point a friendly guy yelled up to me from the parking lot "I want to be up there where you are!". Well we wanted to be up there too.
We did not that the parking authority in Mallory Square were very effecient and we watched them writing tickets. Our rental car was safely parked at the hotel at the $22.00 a day guest rate (plus tax).
Other than driving around the whole island, then heading up to Bahia Honda Park on the causeway one day, we mostly walked.
By the way Bahia Honda Park in my opinion is a dump. It smells. There was seaweed all over the beach. However Key West is not known for wonderful beaches. In case you did not know.
We didn't use much of the amenities at the Resort. We made it down to the pool once. No we didn't hop in, but we did lounge around and had some very nice drinks. We didn't use the fitness room, no the spa. We did have some drinks and meals on Sunset Pier in front of the resort, and that was very nice. We didn't even make it to the Resort Restuarant - The Hot Tin Roof-. I checked the menu recently and it didn't look bad for pricing. Its comparable to what I would pay for a good restaurant back home.
Some things you should not miss in Key West. Duck Tour? Do it. Conch Tour Train? Do it! Pepes Restaurant on Caroline St (not that far!) Do it! It looks like a dump but food is great, and people watching is fun. Sloppy Joes? Been by, got photographed on the web cam, just didn't go in. You can only stop at so many places. DJs Crab Shack? You gotta do it. Fantastic lobster roll and shrimps. We did it three times. Margarittaville? Best Cuban sandwhich ( and also first) and Margarittas that we ever had. Do it?
But should you do Ocean Key? Hmm.... If prices do not bother you, and I really should have complained about the room, than yes, it is central, and yes you can buy a lot of the amenities, and yes if you start throwing money around, then the staff will probably start to slobber over you. We didn't throw any money around other than the normal tips and chamber maid tips. So we felt the service was ok as opposed to exceptional, a description you will find from the other guests who did seem to throw money around (eg: we went to the spa every morning, they catered our wedding, they took care of our 20 person group, etc, etc) Matter of fact some of the reviews sounded like they were from the Manager at the Ocean Key.
So what dos it cost? We spent about $2900 on five days not including meals, plus flight, plus car rental, plus attractions. Yes the room did start out at $382.00 a night, but add in the room for your car, tax, the bump up to $569.00 for Friday night before tax, the daily cost just for the resort was $580.00 per day. If we had gone in the summer, the daily price would have been much cheaper, but its warm in the summer back home too.
But Key West is Key West. It is expensive. You can go cheaper. We did enjoy our stay, visiting a bar here and there, and never falling down drunk, seeing the sights, talking to the retail staff, and the beautiful weather.
We would have liked to have stayed longer, but I did have to get back to work. The bottom line is Ocean Key Resort with the ocean view is very nice, just bring your AMEX, which we did.

Room Tip: rooms vary by "age". Ask for a better one if you end up in a tired room

I live in the keys but had the pleasure of staying at Ocean Key this weekend while I had some family in town. We shared a two bedroom suite and it was more than enough space for all of us. The staff was wonderful especially the girls at the pool, they were so attentive and friendly. (Get up early and snag a poolside cabana!) We had a harbor view unit and the view was incredible, I kept telling everyone that I would probably live on that balcony. I will definitely be recommending Ocean Key to any friends and family coming to Key West.

What a hotel should be. Excellent service, food, facilities, staff, not too mention location, location, location. Will definitely stay there again.

I setup a special birthday dinner with Nate the concierge. Not only did he come thru. But we were treated as though we had the entire restaurant to ourselves. Also they gave us the best table they have. A total experience. Thank you all!
