My sister and I stayed here for a week after visiting Miami for a week, and just loved the Marquesa hotel! Just after stepping into the cool air conditioned entrance of the hotel, we thought "Wow" this is just fab! Our room also had the wow factor, beautifully decorated and laid out and very spacious, with a lovely bathroom. The staff are very friendly and cannot do enough for you and are always on hand for advice as to where to go and what to do. The location is also perfect, less than 5 minutes away from busy Duval Street, but the hotel is a peaceful and tranquil stay. The pool areas are just wonderful, with a great cold pool for a hot day (which there were many) and a solar heated pool, both surrounded by lovely gardens, plants and trees and all you can hear is the gentle trickling of water. Key West is a great place with lots to see and do, and the beautiful surrounding houses are just wonderful to see with their magnificent verandas, wooden shutters and colourful blooms. Key West and the Marquesa topped off a wonderful holiday and one we will never forget.

As a longtime visitor to beautifull Key West(20+years),with extensive national and international travel experience,it's time to express our views on the Marquesa Hotel.

My wife and I travel annually (1-3 times/yr.) to K.W. Our stays have occured in most every month of the year, most recently December 27,2007 thru January 8,2008.,celebrating wedding anniversaries ,birthdays or what ever excuse we could dream up.

Without exception,we can say the accomodations and ammenities at the Marquesa are always excellent.Recent upgrades have added even more to the Marquesa experience. The overall environment is serene and peacefull, the staff outstanding in every respect. From the moment of checking in, with a provided glass of wine ,tranquillity seeps in.The entire staff, Dennis, Bob,Richard, Drew ,Mary and Carol extend every courtesy to welcome ,and assure a wonderfull stay at Marquesa.

From day 1- until departure, the housekeeping crew under the of leadership of Esther provides excellent and friendly attention to our every need and comfort ,and with a cheerful smile.

The beautiful flowers, lush foliage , tranquil pools and waterfall ,create a serene surrounding & are reason alone for returning to the Marquesa

Equally impressive ,stylish and fun the on-premise Cafe Marquesa is a splendid experience in beautiful K.W.Chef Susan presents a exquisite ,delicious and unique menu, beautifully presented in a casual ,sophisticated style. We would be remiss not to mention the awesome staff and wonderful service.Jeanette, the maitre-d along with Michael,Damon,Allison,Amy,David,Erin and our Meggie, all make the dining and invibing at the Marquesa --World Class and Fun.

Combined the hotel and the cafe are a reprive from the all to busy world, but close enough to everything in KW. We will be returning yet again in Oct., Dec., Jan., & are looking forward to hearing "Welcome Home" -- which is what the Marquesa is all about.

I would recommand this small hotel to everybody I know. It was super! Nice, clean rooms, very very nice staff (Richard), a wonderfull restaurant, well, everthing was just perfect! What I liked most was the intimacy, it's a small hotel, and the staff is really helpfull and knows you by name. One small thing which could be better is the breakfast. But still I would certainly come back!

From the moment we checked in, everything was perfect.
We had a junior suite in newer building. Large and quiet with a mostly private lanai.
Grounds are beautiful, employees very helpful, all details attended to. 2 pools.
"Nothing to complain about " which is what we said when we checked out- can't always say that.
Would stay there again without a doubt.
A 5 star hotel.

This is a lovely hotel, upmarket and stylish, with attention to detail. Attractive gardens with orchids and two pools. Top quality room. Didn't see a better looking hotel in Key West. Great location, central but quiet. Really enjoyed our stay.

Boy, what an experience to forget!

My wife and I, a 40-something professional couple from London, UK, adore Key West – this was our 2nd visit (the first time, we stayed at Ambrosia House – highly recommended). However, our experience at the Marquesa can only be described as a comedy of errors, a real episode of Fawlty Towers and trust me, if you’re looking for service (I mean ANY service!), look elsewhere! We paid around $3750 for a 10 night stay and ended up with our own little piece of Nazi Germany! Here are the raw facts:

1. We arrived at 3:00am after a nightmare 28 hour journey from London. The best welcome the Night Manager could muster was “I thought you weren’t coming”! In fact, we stayed for 10 nights and waited that long for any sort of welcome – which never came!

2. Awoke at 11 that morning and called for a coffee, only to be told “The machine has been shut down – you can go get a coffee somewhere 2 blocks away”! This is a hotel which "offers 24 hour room service"!!

3. At the end of that day, I take my laptop to the office because there’s no laptop safe in the room and when I’d called the hotel the previous week to ask whether there was somewhere to safely store it when we go out, I was told, sure, just bring it to us in the office. So, I turn up, the guy looks at me like I’m mad and asks me why I should want to leave it with them and what the problem is with leaving it in the room. I think I ran away!

4. The next morning – at 6:45am – the phone rings, wakes us up – and it’s a wrong number – a call meant for our next door neighbour! When we ask the Night Manager why he’d put the call through to us, he starts shouting…..”If the caller asks for Room xxx, that’s what they’re going to get”! When asked what name the caller asked for, he says “they didn’t, they just asked for the room number”. Is there any major hotel in the world which will put through a call just asking for a room number and not a resident name – and at 6.45am?? I don’t think so!

5. That evening, we ask the same Night Manager for a takeout menu. He asks, aggressively “What do you want, the whole book?”!! He then does a complete double take and tells us there’s only one company which delivers after 11pm anyway! Wow!

6. We’ve had enough – had enough of being polite and getting short shrift so we ask to speak to the owner – a very sympathetic lady who agrees with everything we say, apologises profusely and assures us that “things will change”……..but they don’t, they just get worse!

7. We have a private sundeck in front of the room. It gets messy – tea/coffee cups, plates etc. on the table from room service, the usual stuff one accumulates during the day. Housekeeping staff walk past the deck, up and down, all day long and does somebody tidy the mess? Oh no…and when I tell the Housekeeping Supervisor I’m not happy, she tells me she didn’t want to disturb us and then I get to hear that the management are unhappy that I even mentioned it! So, you get room service and you clear it up yourself – 8 hours later….and you’re paying $350+ per night?!!

8. We have aircon in the room but if we dare have the door open (to go in and out of the room), staff appear instantaneously (hiding behind a bush?) and tell you to close your door! On 3 separate occasions when the door is open and we’ve switched the aircon off (we should have to do this?), we go to turn it back on again and find that it’s been switched off in the boiler room!! Three times this happens and all three times we’re told they haven’t switched it off, only for us to then see a member of staff sneak into the boiler room and, hey presto, it comes back on!!

9. We ask to see the owner again. She doesn’t come! We’re now 8-9 days in and nobody has ever said “Hi”, “Welcome”, “Is everything OK?”. Nothing! It’s like turning up at your own timeshare and cheekily expecting service!

10. It’s our final morning and we ask to pay the bill. The owner is there. When I try to talk to her, the Manager comes out, stands in front of her and tells me she doesn’t want to talk to me!! She starts crying – very professional – and he eventually offers me a $50 dollar discount against a $3750 bill, for all the aggravation over 11 days!

Now, this is a great property – it’s pretty and it’s clean and although our $290 plus tax per night Deluxe room was nice, it wasn’t exactly spacious but boy, do you want to be treated like this? The hotel is always full and it’s quite clear that the snooty, stuffy, rude staff “come first” and paying guests come a very poor second. You’ll read about some similar experiences if you look at all the reviews on this hotel. It’s a great shame because the Marquesa hotel staff did their very best to spoil our vacation….of course it was down to us to make sure they didn’t succeed.

Phew!

We just returned from a week's stay at the Marquesa. A quiet, relaxing retreat in a great location in Key West. Our experience was wonderful! From the wine upon arrival, to the twice daily housekeeping to the Godiva chocolates at turndown in the evening - this was a first class experience. The grounds were meticulous, the room very clean and the staff pleasant. The Marquesa treats its guests to a wine/cheese poolside get-together on Saturdays - a nice touch! The location is great - we didn't use the car the entire week. This is the perfect place for romance and relaxing while close to the bars/restaurants in the evening. I highly recommend dining at the Cafe Marquesa while in Key West - our favorite dining experience out of the seven days. We have decided to make a return visit next spring!
