“Two-Lane Driving! Yikes!”
Reviewed May 11, 2013

Without a doubt the drive through the Keys is absolutely GORGEOUS!!! Nothing but bridges (including the famous 7-mile bridge) and beautiful water, BUT the two-lane driving is NO joke!!!

I flew into to Miami and rented a car to drive to Key West! The drive is about 3+ hours long. You will go through the MANY different keys, but there are plenty of places along the way for you to stop for a rest.

I don't think personally that I could do the drive again, since there are services that will take you from Ft. Lauderdale, Miami, Ft. Meyers Beach, & Marco Island to Key West. Check out: Keys Shuttle and Key West Express!!

But if you are up for the drive, pack a lot of PATIENCE and have you camera ready!

“Not what I had expected.”
Reviewed May 10, 2013

Nice road, but as a first-timer on it, I had expected a lot more ocean-gulf views. I had no idea the various keys were so large! This is not a criticism of the highway, just an observation. Other than the low speed limits, it is a very nice drive. Of course, I especially liked the parts of the over-water bridges!

“Watch the ocean life from the bridge”
Reviewed May 9, 2013

We walked the 7 mile bridge in the morning around 9am. I was amazed to giant Manta rays, smaller stingrays, we saw a sea huge turtle and schools of tarpans. Along the bridge you'll see locals who use it for a bike ride or jog. It can get very hot out there, make sure you bring some water. It's absolutely free, although there is a guy there accepting donations and selling tee shirts to preserve the decaying bridge. If you come, make sure you stay for at least an hour, the farther you walk, the more sea life you'll see. It's also a great place to get a sunset picture.

“The only road to get to Key West”
Reviewed May 7, 2013

This is a beautiful drive from the top to the bottom of the Keys. If you are in a hurry to get to Key West, take a plane. It will take several hours to get there from Homestead and since Overseas Hwy is only two lanes, with only a few places to pass, plan on having patience! But it is a pretty drive and stop along the way at each Key's visitor center to learn about each Key. The visitor centers are the BEST. They get faxes every day about vacancies from different hotels and B and B's , so if you are looking for a place to stay, let them guide you. They know the area well. And they are all located on Overseas Highway. Enjoy!

“Great scenario!”
Reviewed May 7, 2013

This gorgeous highway gives you a non-ending fabulous aquarelle painting from Key Largo to Key West! All shades of turquoise, blue, light blue and emerald everywhere you see. Peaceful, pristine waters that really makes you think you are in God's presence. Can't wait to come back!
