This is DEFINITELY something to see in your lifetime. I don't know how they've managed to keep this road in place for so long when it faces such extreme weather/water. It's quite a picturesque marvel! Historic. Wonderful. So glad this exists. We drove it end to end and hope to do so again.

Take turns driving so you can enjoy the view. It's especially beautiful to drive in the direction of sunrise or sunset. Even though it's only 3 hours, I wish we had spread the trip over two days and spent some more time at John D. Pennekemp State Park - it was beautiful!

Not recommended for night travel...on a windy night....or on a rainy night. Much of the old causeway has been replaced with modern highway and bridges...over 170 throughout the upper and lower Keys. If you arrive in Havana....you've gone too far! We were able to make the trip in 2 hours and 10 minutes from Key Largo to Key West for a Friday morning destination wedding. If you don't turn right or left....you cannot get lost...it's a one sometimes 2 lane highway with some breathtaking views over water....lots of water. No need to speed here...there are some tender spots along the way.....if you see dogs with antlers...you're not hallucinating....they are Pine Key Deer.....endangered species....3 foot tall to the withers with a full 12 point deer rack that you would normally see hanging on a 250 pound trophy buck deer. Don't be hitting one now because you'll probably be giving up your car, your firstborn and 3 years behind bars. Yeah, I know everybody's trying to pull the wool over the tourists' eyes down here....not so....I almost hit one crossing US 1 at a stop light....all she saw was a rack walking across in front of my hood. If my wife hadn't screamed I would have hit the gas when the light turned green. And in October through December they are everywhere during the rut, so slow down unless you want to see your name sprawled across the news.....Outlander hits endangered Species....Hanging at noon. Gas was $ 4.29 when we left Key West and we traveled this highway back and forth 3 times from Key Largo. From Key Largo to Florida City or vice versa is a different story and you can't miss the painted blue concrete dividers painted by prison inmates. Notice that there are fences with wire on both sides of the road. That isn't for tall alligators. It's to keep the prisoners from being eaten by alligators when they try to escape....so don't you be stopping to pick up hitch hikers, getting directions or getting out of your car because if the prisoners are working the highway cleanup crew you don't want to end up being the Sequel for Cool Hand Luke....it's a one laner with several points to pass slow traffic, but I wouldn't want to get a ticket here for 10 over....it's $562 and they hold you back at the station for 7 hours before releasing you after bond has been approved....that advice is from a friend who warned that the taxes in Florida are collected mainly on the highways, fuel, hotel and entertainment. In any case your want to get up and go could cost you plenty. There are plenty of things to see on Travenier Key and Islamodora Key so plan to spend some time stopping and visiting the sites. When entering Pine Deer Key on the curve (can't miss the smell) go another block and on the left is the Chamber of Commerce Information Center.....it is a nice place to stop...free maps and lots of information where the sites to see all through the Keys can be had for the asking. Nice people working this place. We spent 4 days in the Keys, wish I could have spent at least 3 more....very friendly islanders. No tolls.

Over every one of the 42 bridges you discover a new vista. Stop & Discover a hidden cove or beach. Relax your on "Island Time"....
