Owner description: The home of Capt. John H. Geiger, harbor pilot and master wrecker, was built between 1846 and 1849. Slated for destruction in 1958, it was saved by the Mitchell Wolfson Family Foundation, a nonprofit educational institution. This large scale restoration was the first of its kind in Key West, thus sparking the restoration movement in Key West.Antique enthusiasts will appreciate the unique quality of the furnishings displayed in the Audubon House Museum. All furnishings reflect the elegance and comfortable living enjoyed for a wealthy family in Key West during the mid-1800’s. 31 of the original hand colored Antique engravings of the 22 birds J.J. Audubon painted in the Florida Keys during his 6 week visit in 1832 can be seen throughout the House. In addition to informative reading panels, an introduction to the property and its history will be given by your guide, and then you will roam the house and gardens at your leisure. Varieties of orchids and bromeliads emerge from the foliage and trees to surprise you with their vibrant blooms. Native plants and exotics provide an environment that is reminiscent of old Key West. Trees and plants are labeled with their common names, Latin names, and country of origin. This is the finest tropical garden in the Florida Keys. You may even catch a glimpse of some of our local birds! The garden tour also includes a self-guided visit to the Cook House. Houses of the period in the Florida Keys did not have inside kitchens as they were sources of heat and of course, fire hazards. A visit to the Audubon Gallery of Fine Arts will take you through the wonderful world of original Audubon Antique hand painted lithographs. The original Antique prints of some of J.J. Audubon’s contemporaries are also available for sale. The Museum Shop offers a wide selection of unique one-of-a-kind gifts, home décor, Antiques and educational materials. Our lush tropical gardens can be the site of your event:, whether you are planning a wedding or a corporate event. Let us make your event happen.

“Beautiful Birds, Lush Gardens, Amazing Orchids”
Reviewed June 1, 2014

First, hands off to the master gardener of this property. Some truly amazing orchids are to be found here. You begin your tour in the gift shop, (washrooms nearby) and then walk through an area of the gardens to the house with a tour guide. Excellent informational history. Tour on your own speed to the second and third floors up and down steps. The house is air conditioned. Sit awhile on the back porch and enjoy the gardens. I found the gift shop to be rather expensive but the folks working there were absolutely delightful. Mention "save a tree" and get a buck off of your admission. Or, you can purchase your ticket in advance online and also save money. Right off of Mallory Square, this is a wonderful Key West property and is well worth the time.

Dear AdventureLass: we will make sure to share your comments with Tim and Mik who make these gardens look as fabulous as they do! You can certainly feel their love and concern throughout. We do believe in letting our visitors’ tour at their own leisure, after they listen to our docents for a couple of minutes. It allows everyone to then focus and enjoy the House, its history and artifacts, and the gardens at their own speed. Hope you'll come back to Key West and visit us again!

“Good visit for art and garden enthusiasts”
Reviewed May 31, 2014

The tour only lasts around 10 minutes but it is intriguing anyway. There are beautiful pieces of art depicting many bird species that are the originals Audubon sought out, and most are scaled to size. This aspect gives visitors an insight to the unique creatures that he strives to document. The gardens are most spectacular as well.

“Better honor to Audubon here than at Audubons 1st home at Mill Grove in PA”
Reviewed May 28, 2014

We had gone to Audubons first home in America at Mill Grove in Pennsylvania and were disappointed in a quickee 5 min rushed tour and in the gift shop choices even though the girl was very nice and we liked her. Here at the Audubon House in Key West we were soo pleasantly surprised. They dont try to pretend he lived in the house & they will explain that to you if you go...however....they do pay homage to him in an honorary way which we preferred over Milll Grove. The gift shop is expensive but you can purchase some authentic stuff there if you got the cash. Otherwise, just enjoy the house tour and the gardens surrounding it and even the bathrooms with the beautiful Audubon prints on the walls. Tour guide was informative and after giving the verbal info tour on the 1st flr, you can go thru the rooms and from floor to floor at your own leisure and pace. Its really nice! And while you're there, go across the street to the Mel Fischer Maritime Heritage Museum or down the street to the Ernest Hemingway House or further down to the concrete buoy which marks the Southernmost spot in the United States & from that point its 90 miles to cuba..usually a line there to take a pix but it goes fast. Bicyclists, pedestrians, tiny streets, all around...so just go with the flow about 10 mph on these streets, dont stress, and you'll have a great time. The house is open 7 days a week, and you can get a 1.00 off house tour if you mention "save a tree" --they dont want you to print the 1.00 coupon so you can save a tree but just mention it and they'll give you the 1.00 off. Go and enjoy!!!

Dear Sandy: What can we say! In one single paragraph, you were able to totally describe what the experience at the Audubon House is like! It is a wonderful step back into History. The furnishings are period, the retelling of the Audubon time in Key West through his images of 22 birds and the most amazing gardens! Thank you for posting this wonderful review!

“Worth the visit”
Reviewed May 25, 2014

I loved seeing all the Audubon watercolors in the Audubon House. The house also has some things that I'd never seen before such as a cellarmate (a wooden cooler) and a ceramic baby feeding gizmo. The tropical gardens that surround the house were beautiful. Full of orchids and little lizards that run all over the place. Definitely worth the visit.

Dear Ann D: We are thrilled you enjoyed your visit with us and that you are taking home some wonderful memories of JJ Audubon's stay in the Keys through his artwork. The House itself certainly does have some unusual and amazing pieces to admire. The amount of plants and orchids in the gardens assure vibrant colors throughout the year. Hope you will visit us again the next time you are in Key West! Thank you for taking the time to post this review.

Dear Loves2travel: Thank you for your review of the Audubon House. Seems you took in some of Key West's more fun tours with the haunted pub crawl and your visit with us. We love when our visitors have a great experience. We are very fortunate that all our docents are well informed and love to engage with our visitors. We also agree that the orchids are certainly putting on a show this year! Hope to see you again soon.
