We had a wonderful time at this park and beach. We rode our bikes in. I wouldn't recommend walking unless you are staying very close. It's a long way into the park from the main road. Once you are there, you are mesmerized with the wonderful scenery and beautiful water. While the beach is a bit rocky (shoes are recommended), the swimming and snorkeling are fabulous. They rent beach chairs and umbrellas there, and there's a food vendor so you can have lunch. It is a wonderful place.

Great beach! Rent chairs and umbrella- well worth the price. Natural beach so it is Rocky. Wear water shoes and you will have no problem. Lots of shade and bar-b-q areas. Small cafe to get lunch, drinks - beer and excellent piña coladas. Saw dolphins swimming near by. Good snorkling on calm non windy days. The Ft is also worth visiting. Ride into park with bikes or cars. Nominal fee well worth it.

My wife like the public beach. She likes the people watching.

I prefer the quieter state park. With the beatiful hiking and biking trails and the forrest.

To each their own.

The fort. The fort offers a beautiful view of Key West from the roof and a nice window into our Civil War and Spanish-American War history. Take your time to walk around and read the signs. The bike path around the moat is a nice ride. Keep your eyes pealed for iguanas!

The beach. The beach is both beautiful and peaceful and wasn't too crowded. We would recommend wearing water shoes. On the day that we went the wind had kicked up, so snorkeling was not an option. We did have a nice walk on the beach. We would certainly go back if in Key West again.

No trip to Key West is complete without a stop at Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park. The beach is fantastic, surely the loveliest beach in Key West, and the surroundings -- the palm trees and sea pines and all the other tropical foliage -- tell you that you have arrived in a true island Paradise. The café is an 'order-at-the-window' and wait for your food type, but there are a lot of good tables, each with its own umbrella for shade, and with a good view of the beach and blue, blue Key West sea just beyond. It may cost a few bucks to enter the state park grounds but, believe me, it will be money well spent. This is one attraction that you won't want to miss. The beach is so much more beautiful than Smathers Beach, so that alone is worth the price of admission. And the Key Eco-Discovery Center, which is free, is located nearby.
