I assume we expected too much of Key West. The fort is interesting to visit, but rather small (especially compared with Fort Jefferson on Dry Tortugas). The park as a whole is almost all that Key West offers for nature enthousiasts and it can be disappointing: the first thing you notice after you start walking in the park is that it won't be long before you reach the other side of it. The beach, like other Key West beaches, is not a great beach. Even though, the park is definitively worth a visit to get away from the hustle and cheap tourism of Duval Street.

If you want to go to the best beach on the island, this is it. It will cost you a few dollar to enter, but well worth it.

This is the best beach area Key West has to offer. Bring a pair of water shoes because the rocks can be hard on your feet! Good snack bar has a verity of sandwiches and salads that are well priced. Each day at 12:00 noon the park ranger offers a tour of the old fort ruins which is well worth the time spent!

This is the perfect beach, you can walk out on the sand and have full sun while enjoying a lovely beach. Or if you choice like myself you may stay back just a short 3 steps and be under the ironwood trees and enjoy the sounds of the ocean and and still be cool in the shade getting a great breeze off the water.
The picnic tables or sitting so you can enjoy the view with lots of grills around should you like to BBQ. Everything is cleaned everyday and the beach and grounds and grills are spotless.
This is a no trash beach so there are no trash cans. What trash you make you must take with you so bring a bag for your trash and carry it out and throw it away outside the park. Oh yes the concession stand is great with good food and friendly staff. You may rent chairs if you wish and the bathrooms are close and very clean. One of the most wonderful beaches we have been to and we lived in Hawaii for many years. If you can stay and watch the sunset from the beach BEAUTIFUL!

We were staying across from Smathers Beach but decided to take a day and go to Fort Zachary. We are glad we did. The 4 of us rented snorkel equipment and spent many hours in the waters near the large rock formations just off the beach. We saw stingray and countless beautiful fish. The price is right for snorkeling ($13 for complete set-up per person). Make sure to bring flip flops to walk around as the beach is very rocky, especially near the water.
