Owner description: A pretty public beach; several vendors rent water sports gear and beach chairs.

First, for those who have not been to Key West, it is not like other Florida beach vacation spots where you can walk out from any hotel and be on the beach. From what we found, KW offers very few "swimming beaches". Smathers and Fort Zachary Taylor are two beaches that we found on our trip. Smathers was less crowded so we chose this spot for some relaxing beach time. We took snorkel gear and had a little success. Don't expect to see a lot of fish like you will at the reef, but it was fun.

Look, as people wrote, KEY WEST has no GOOD beaches. It's a nice islando to visit, all that, but there are thousands of better beaches all over. The sand is ok, there are cocopalms but the problem are the tons of seaweed. We did not know about that but as you walk 10 to 15 feets into the water you start to step over all that seaweed and it's not a delicious experience... Girls start to shout and some boys too (not me! LOL). We visited many places at Caribe. Try Nassau or Grand Cayman beaches instead !

Lived in Key West for about 8 months now and just managed to get to the beach. Key West is not known for its beaches, that is not why you should come here....just want to put that out there up front. This review is so your expectations are not inflated by people who somehow think this is a good beach. My guess is they have no been to a good beach.

The actual beach part (sand) is very thin and the sand is not all that nice. Lots of rocks, that is for sure. The water is just terrible. Now let me explain.....the water itself in the Keys is awesome, super clear and blue. The problem at this beach is tons of seaweed and about 15 feet out the ocean floor is more like mud than sand, so bad your foot sinks about 4-6 inches down in it and it feels nasty....like mud.

Just not a pleasant experience at all. We went and ate at Salute down by the other public beach and it appeared much better but was small and very crowded. Still, I would give it a try first.

This is a great beach to relax on the sand, but don't go into the water unless you love seaweed and coral; its sucks.
