Great spot to camp

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Apr 19, 2022
We stayed for a long weekend and found the camp to be clean and friendly. Had a nice spot that was shady and private and the facility is right around the corner from a Publix and a couple of restaurants. Just one mile south of Pennekamp. Will camp there again.

We only stayed a couple days passing through. We tried to use the pool but because owners are allowed to reserve pool chairs for as many hours s as they want by putting a rolled up towel on them, there were no chairs available. After determining that the chairs had been unoccupied all morning (we asked multiple people who had already been there for couple hours), we placed the towels together on a single chair. An hour later we were treated to a cussing tirade from the owners of the towels. I calmly told him to take it up with management several times. He and his wife returned (still cussing at me) with the office staff member who decided we should let them have the chairs for that day. We immediately vacated the chairs and informed the staff member that we would be writing a review for the place. That immediately got the staff member agitated and proceeded to follow us out of the pool area. Never did I imagine that management would be okay with the owners treating renters that way. If they don’t want campers they they shouldn’t advertise as an RV park.

This is a cute well priced place. It is clean. BUT: we stayed for two nights so that we could see the area and Key West. After coming back at 8pm from Key West for the day, our hammocks and tent were gone from the site. We called security and they called the manager. At first they blamed us that we were supposed to check out that day. I showed them the receipt. Then I was told I had camped in the wrong spot. I showed them picture taken during and after our setup that clearly showed tent site 3 which was assigned. They could not explain why our tent was missing but they had the hammocks (the $150 each) in their office. I had to sleep in the car for the night. When I went to check out the next morning and asked if I could talk about a possible refund for the one night (not both), I was yelled at by the person in the office and to leave and not say another word. I tried to explain that our tent was stolen and was cut off and yelled at again "don't say another word to me, get out of my office, get out of here". She continued yelling at me as I told her to have a good day and left the property. All I wanted was a conversation, I only got 3 sentences out and received the nastiest customer service ever in my life. I am waiting to hear back from Key Largo Chamber of Commerce and BBB with my complaints to them.

Overall, I really enjoyed our time at Key Largo Kampground. We camped for 5 nights with 2 adults and 4 children. There was a heated pool, a small playground, basketball hoop, etc. You are able to check-out sports equipment. The beaches feed into shallow sea grass, with upside down jelly fish. Not great for swimming, but good for launching paddle boards or kayaks and exploring mangrove forests. Overall people were friendly, both staff, owners, and other guests. Some of the spaces were a little run-down. The sink for washing dishes is hard to find and dingy.

We were slightly disappointed by the size and arrangement of the tent site. We were in site 22, one of the "Large" sites. The shaded, pea-stoned, rectangle, fenced-in lot is for site 22 AND 22A, and makes for a tight squeeze and no privacy. We had 2 tents, an 8-person and a 6-person, and just barely fit everything (including large SUV) on our side of the lot. Though when compared to other tent sites, this one is large. The other tent sites were VERY SMALL and had even less privacy.

That being said, if you manage your expectations, I think this is a cute, nice, affordable place to stay while visiting the Keys. Kids had a good time running around, checking out basketballs, swimming in pool, etc. We went on night walks and would hang out on the beach - you can shine flashlights into the water and see crabs and shrimp.

We intended to stay at KLK for 8 nights, we ended up leaving early due to a few issues that we related to management and they are working on.

First, the good, our site, #70 was great! Very easy to park our 33ft trailer, tons of room for our truck, kayaks, bikes, cooking area, etc. the covered dock was a great spot to enjoy the water. We had manatees in the canal in the afternoons! The hook ups were easy to access and we had no issues with the water, electric or sewer services.

The location is very convenient to Pennekamp State Park. We launched our kayaks from our site and paddled all over the state park and mangroves. What a great experience!

Now the not so good-this park is primarily occupied by park model and trailers that are individually owned. Some are in great condition, others are falling apart. As the campground operates as a condominium association, there is really no way for management to control what an owner does with their site. Some owners rent their lots, either for trailers or as a vrbo/airbnb for their tiny home/park model.

As each is individually owned, the amenities vary greatly. In the RV sites, there is no WiFi, some
Of the tiny homes/park models have WiFi. Not a big deal as they have a lounge with great WiFi. Our problem was that we were asked by a resident to leave the lounge as we were not owners. So, no WiFi. We work on the road, so WiFi is needed. We were fine with going to the lounge to work, management was very apologetic that we were asked to leave and assured us we are allowed in the lounge and the resident was wrong for asking us to leave.

The other issue that ultimately caused us to leave was a very rude resident. While walking out dog we were yelled at by the resident in one of the homes in the area of lot 45 -50. She scolded us for allowing our dog to do her “business” near her home. We are very responsible dog owners and clean up after our do. While removing the “business”she would not let up scolding us for allowing our dog near her lot. For the rest of our stay she stood in her door watching us as we passed by walking the dog.

The manager has been on site only a few months. She is very aware of the issues we experienced and many other problems and is trying to make improvements. It will be a slow process as the condo assoc board runs the place. The managers hands are somewhat tied.

We would return to KLK for an overnight stay while traveling, but not an extended stay. There is so much potential at KLK if the owners/condo board will allow the manager to make changes that benefit the owners/residents and the short term vacationer. We will continue to watch this place and hope it becomes what it can be!

Made a special trip down to camp ground to see the site for Labor Day weekend was told no we can’t see it. Arrive today paying premium waterfront price and no shade no tiki. Every lot on water has a tiki but ours. Lot 85.
Office never advised us of this and when requested to change lots was told no but also told they don’t assign lots🙈 looking around multiple lots on water empty with tiki huts!!!!!!
What terrible terrible customer service. Won’t repeat here but will share the bad experience. To warn others
