We just got back from Key Largo and stayed at Sunset Cove Beach Resort for 6 daysand had a wonderful stay. Stayed in Room #4 had kitchen and super nice and very clean. Great view.
The man made beach was much more than we thought it would be. Nice beach chairs and super sunset view. Management was the most helpful ever and always kinds and wore a smile, very helpful telling us great places to eat. The maid service was great and such a wonderful lady she was. I would recommend the place to anyone and we are definitely going back. Also enjoyed Key Largo and the other Keys. Renting a car is a must but very easy to get around. The hotel management never lead us wrong. We give it a 10.

One word of caution. Don't bring your cell phones on the dock...LOL

The Sunset Cove Beach Resort is a gem nestled just off of the Overseas Highway where there's plenty to be found to do. The resort itself has a dozen or so cottages of varying sizes, many with full kitchenettes (stove, full fridge, full size sink) enabling you to prepare you own dinners in the cottage, or there are plenty of restaurant options near this pet friendly hotel. Two friends and I took our five (yes, five!) dogs to the Sunset Cove Beach Resort in mid-July 2010, and by the time we were leaving we had already begun to plan our return trip in October 2010. So far, we've stayed in cottages 5 and 6. Cottage 5 had been fully redone prior to our arrival in July. Cottage 6 is still due to be redone. Either cottage though is old-style Key's accomodations with updates to make your stay more comfortable. Each cottage came with the full kitchenette and also included a coffee maker, toaster, and microwave oven. Each cottage also had a DVD player with movies available to check out from the office should bad weather appear for a time. There were two comfortable double beds in each, and the office was very quick to provide extra pillows and towels on request. The bathroom contains a medicine chest, vanity, shower, and window.

The exterior of the cottages are old-style Florida - stucco over concrete block with flat sloped roofs and shutters at each window. The fronts of each cottage contain landscaping and a small grassy patch under palm trees where two (more if needed) adirondack chairs and a small table are provided to allow for sitting out and drinking coffee to get the day started, or reading a book under the shade in the afternoons and evening. The resort also provides an open grass area and 3 Tiki huts in the center of the resort - one with two hammocks, and the other two with seating areas, a picnic table, glass block bar area, and grills nearby for cookouts with friends and neighbors. The huts also provide a water fountain and a couples swing to simply sit back in the shade and relax.

The staff bends over backward to make your stay a great one. They have great recommendations on nearby eating establishments - even those that are pet friendly. The Conch House will provide water bowls for your dogs before they put water on the table for the patrons. They also provide breakfast onsite at the office each morning consisting of coffee, apple and orange juice, danishes, and fresh fruits. In addition to movies being available, the resort also provides canoes and kayaks with paddles and life vests for guests to use to paddle around in the gulf to sight see. They even have boat trailer parking available onsite as well.

The beach is private (separate from neighboring hotels) which include a dock for either tying a boat to if you arrive by boat, or sitting out on to watch the sunsets each evening (unobstructed view of full sunset). The beach also includes lounge and adirondack chairs, and two raised platforms - one of which has another couples swing. The water is shallow (4 ft deep at the end of the dock) so even small children can swim and be safe.

Near the resort are two pharmacies (CVS and Walgreens), a Dunkin Doughnuts, a Dive Shop, and Mrs. Mac's Kitchen (a locals favorite) where you can get a full prime rib dinner for $15 bucks as late at 9 pm. Also - try SunDownders (approximately 5 miles north of the resort). They have excellent food, and you can dine dockside, on the beach, or in the dining room. There is also a full Publix grocery within 3 miles for stocking up when needed. A 15 minute drive south of the resort takes you to "Theatre of the Sea" where admission gives you access to several scheduled shows involving dolphins, sea lions, a full nature walk, an open bottom boat ride, a parrot show, and gift shop. Well worth the time to see. On the way back to the resort, be sure to check out the "Rain Barrel" - a complex of various artists with goods for sale. They have everything from relief metal work, carved wood statuary, and pottery fired onsite and a snack bar. The resort is also located approximately 1.5 hours drive north of Key West, which allows you to leave in the morning and have a beautiful drive down, completely tour Key West and all their sites, and get back to the resort for an evening supper comfortably.

I highly recommend the Sunset Cove Beach Resort - especially for those traveling with pets. Most hotels in the keys will have a weight or count restriction, and also won't allow you to leave your pet in the room while you sight see. The Sunset Cove doesn't restrict by weight or quantity of pets, nor do they require the pets not be left in the room while you leave the resort (pet's simply aren't allowed in many of the local businesses), and pets are allowed to go anywhere that people can go while onsite. Travelers that stay at this resort are (with only few exceptions) very nice and sociable, and the overall stay is simply a great one!

We were a bit skeptical after reading a few reviews, but we loved it! We stayed in suite 10 which overlooks the water... and what a view.. We were able to use the canoe and kayak within 10 minutes of arriving. The people were very friendly and the room was perfect for the four of us. We will definitely return :)

We stayed there 2 nights. Don't let the strange animals put you off, you soon get used to them. A fun place to stay that is something a bit different to the norm. A nice little beach area where you can see dolphins from. You have free use of the kayaks and you'll also be able to borrow DVDs. The downside is the breakfast which is a muffin or a danish. There is a fabulous restaurant called Mrs Mac that is a short walk away. We loved it so much we went there twice!
