“Wondeul family resort!”
Reviewed May 18, 2014

We stayed only one night due to travel plans, but LOVED this resort. It is a wonderful location for a family trip including all ages. Grnadparents down to toddlers. Beautiful quite beach with lots of area for kids to play. Jet ski, paddle board, boat rentals with deep sea fishing and scuba, snorkel trips right on site. Great beach club restaruant and beautiful sun set restaurant all righ there! We will definately go back here!

Room Tip: Can’t say there is a bad room!

We tagged 3 nights onto a Miami business trip and drove down to Key Largo. This hotel was a good choice for us. Our first room had a poor view ( although we had been upgraded.) our subsequent request to be re located was dealt with really well by the manager , Sam, who was helpful and made us feel nothing was too much trouble. The room was clean and well equipped with lovely views of the resort and dive centre. Bathrooms well appointed and ample towels etc. we ate at Gus grill a couple of times- Reasonable value for a hotel of this quality, but while most staff were good, one or two quite surly and not welcoming . The bar was great, and Adam the barman did a great job with cocktails, and making good suggestions for local restaurants and activities. Beach and pool very clean and well kept , we loved the hammocks to relax in. Overall a very nice hotel and we would definitely return if visiting Key Largo

Room Tip: Ask for bay view

We stopped over here for a night before going to John Pennecamp State Park for snorkeling. The room was clean, modern and well furnished. It has its own pool, pool bar and small beach area. The view is beautiful and the on-site restaurant serves great food at a very reasonable price. Not sure if the location would be for everyone but it was perfect for what we needed. Parking was free too.

We stayed here for one night on our way from key west to Miami to break up the drive.

We were upgraded to a sea view room which was lovely. The room had a large balcony, large bedroom and a bathroom where the sink was outside if the bathroom area (little strange for me)

The beds were very comfy and high, took some getting on them as I'm only small.

The beach was ok, it looked good but the sand is gravel like but the pool is huge and fantastic.

The rooms do need some updating but were ok for a night.

The gym was actually really good and had a lot of high quality machines, they just really need air con in there.

The staff on the front desk were very friendly and helpful.

My husband and I recently did a fly drive holiday to Miami and the Keys. Our 1st night we found ourselves at Key Largo and we tried to get a room at this hotel but it was Saturday night and the hotel was fully booked. The lady in reception was fabulous and she telephoned a lot of other hotels and would not give up until she had found us a room for the night we were so grateful. On the way back up to Miami we stayed at this hotel for 2 nights and again our welcome was marvellous. We had booked an ocean view room and our room and view were stunning. The room was large with 2 queen beds which were really comfortable. The facilities at the resort were very good. The pool and tiki bar were good and the beach was lovely. Breezers ocean side bar was one of the best bars ever to have a cocktail and watch the sun go down. Adam the bartender was great with lots of local knowledge, good stories and he mixes a mean magharita. This hotel also stands for real value for money

At first glance coming to this Marriott you'll find yourself enjoying the beautiful landscaping- palm trees everywhere, beautiful beach front property (which was a priority for me when booking a hotel in Key Largo b/c not many have that), nice pool that was never crowded, awesome views from the balcony, more spacious than I actually thought it would be based on reading previous reviews because there's more space to enjoy the property on the right side of Gus' Grille. Over here you'll find little areas with fire pits, tiki huts, and sandy beach area. If you were traveling as a couple this right side of property would be nice b/c it's right near Breezy's Bar. If you have a toddler (like we did) it's best to be on the side of the pool b/c you can go back and forth from the beach and pool easily. The beach on the pool side was excellent for toddlers b/c the bay was very calm, no waves, very shallow. Don't have to worry about jellyfish or much- only seaweed. The beach is combed every night and chairs put back neatly. Family Friendly. (We also took advantage of the on property Pirate Island Divers- jet skiing and they were very nice. Jet skiing on the bay was very fun and easy to ride especially b/c the water was so calm. Snorkeling was cancelled on two days due to water conditions; otherwise, we would have taken advantage of that also.) All of these as mentioned would contribute to a Five Star rating.

Now for the negatives which are mostly pertaining to the inside of the hotel. This is why I gave it 1 star.
1) First I didn't realize the hotel was like a "motel" setup with doors opening directly to the outside. I must have missed that while doing research.

2) DIRTY ROOMS: The rooms looked modern, but dated b/c the bathroom tiles looked fairly new with clean grout etc; however, the floor tiles throughout the room looked extremely worn with black grout- kind of like what you'd see at an old Hampton Inn. Actually some of the newer Hampton Inn's and Holiday Inn's we've stayed at are nice compared to the floors here. Basically I didn't feel comfortable walking around the floors without my shoes on. The carpet also appeared to be worn at first glance. As we used the housekeeping service daily (except for one day), I quickly realized that they weren't really cleaning the rooms thoroughly. They clearly did not b/c I saw the same dirt/debris/trash that was in the bathroom and main areas on the floor from the first day till the last day we got moved to a 2 bedroom suite-pool side room. (stayed total of 5 days) Did not hear one vacuum being run throughout our stay! It didn't bother me too much..

3) Found a fairly large 1 inch Cockroach- not water bug- underneath the bed. Was looking to make sure nothing fell under there as I was packing up since it was our last night. Basically the cockroach was dead and it had a layer of dust on it, so clearly the housekeeping staff don't vacuum under there...which would be easy to do since the beds sit up very high. (we actually found an old opened chip bag and a beer bottle cap underneath the same bed also..) I'm not sure if it's better to know that the roach was dead or alive, but regardless I couldn't sleep comfortably in the room, so the staff was gracious enough to put us in a 2 bedroom suite. Again awesome views, huge suite with kitchen...everything appeared wonderful at first glance, but... same as previous room.

4) Second Room DIRTY-Even when moved to another room b/c of a roach we found a girl's big hairclip underneath the bed in one of the rooms, there was stained pee marks on the toilet, an old opened chip bag behind the phone (table). A used Qtip in the trashcan. All of this pertains to lack of attention to detail for housekeeping. The rooms were very dusty- they need to get rid of the backboards for the beds and heavy draperies- all dust collectors.

5) Cable TV was not HD...which is fine, not a big deal, but all adds up.

6) Customer service for the most part was lacking. The bar staff never said Hello, the gift shop lady looked unhappy, and some of the staff at the front desk weren't the most friendly people either. Fortis (I think was his name) at the front desk- was maybe one of 2 people that we met during our stay that was extremely friendly, very good customer service.

Overall I see why some of the reviews here were stating that this was not up to Marriott standards. I tried to dismiss the lack of basic housekeeping, and dated rooms, but the cock roach was the icing on the cake!! For what it's worth- I did tons of research staying in Key Largo and this was the best one that I could find based on having access to beach front property, family friendly, central location to drive to the Pennekamp park and to Key West etc. Overall I thought it had excellent reviews and I thought I could deal with the minor details, but in the end if I had to do it over again...I would skip this hotel and location and just make the 2 1/2 hour extra drive to Key West where there is much more to do- more shops, prettier water, more life. In fact we decided against Key West at first b/c of it's reputation and we didn't want it to be too "bar like-party like", but when we went down there on one of the days- we really liked it. It was not just a bunch of bars as I imagined. Still family friendly (we had a toddler with us and a teen with us). Good luck with your research!

We stayed here one night before diving. It served its purpose and for the price it's a good option for the area. Clean, a little dated but not super friendly staff at all. Asked the front desk about late checkout and being in a customer service business myself, I was disappointed in the way she handled our questions. Bar staff, not so friendly. Pool is very nice and we dined at Gus's on site and it was very good. We will stay their again because this is the price we want to spend for this purpose but if budget allows, I'm sure there are a few better options.
