This is our second stay here in two years. We live in O'Fallon Il.,(St. Louis , Mo.), and this is a great place to relax . George the owner, goes out of his way to make sure you have the best stay possible. Gary , his right hand man, is always on site and always help full as well. We use the free kayaks to paddle over to John Pennekamp and go through the mangroves by water. I suggest this, great experience. The Hideout Restaurant is a bonus for breakfast right across the parking lot as well. Overall, we will always stay with George every time we come to Key Largo. Looking forward to seeing you again next year! Thanks George and Gary!

Room Tip: South East Boatels get the morning sunrise. Priceless!

The owner is awesome! He will go out of his way to make you feel comfortable, our reservations are usually last minute but he always comes up with a way to accomadate us. We will always choose to stay there as its reasonable, close, and has a beautiful view.

This was our first trip to Key Largo and our first to stay on a houseboat. Overall the stay was very pleasant. We stayed in the Stress Relief and it was clean, and comfortable. Could use an update in some areas like the window treatments. Overall we were very happy with our choice. Clean, no smells ( I'm very sensitive to mold and mildew), no bugs, staff very friendly and helpful.

You stay on a real houseboat moored to its dock . Kyaks are available ,free to renters and guests . It is walking distance from a very good rustic 'Keasy" restaurant and the dark skys make stargazing fantastic . They let me bring our little dog which was very appreciated .

Do not expect luxurious rooms, but be assured it is functional, clean and defitiely good value for your money. We enjoyed our stay very much. Remote (even though easily accessible), romantic with a huge balcony towards the bay. Not to mention George (the manager) who makes you feel welcome from the very first minute.
Communication (via email) was prompt, helpful, and reliable.

At the request of the proprietor, who sent out a mass email soliciting reviews on Trip Advisor, we were moved to describe our experience with the lodging at Boatel.

As background, my wife and I are Returned Peace Corps volunteers. Our tolerance for spartan or less than ideal accommodations is quite high. That said, one line we expect not to be crossed is an infestation of vermin.

Permit me to elaborate. We scheduled a 3 day stay at the Key Largo Boatel from July 14th to July 17th, 2012. We had driven all day and arrived late at night exhausted and were assigned to Boat 2. We rolled in all our gear and luggage, noted the musty “sleepover in high school friend’s mildewy basement that hasn’t been cleaned in a while” vibe, tucked in our kids, and went to sleep.

Imagine our dismay the next day when we found an adult bedbug feeding on our eldest son, and all of us were itching from the bites of a host of bloodsucking parasitic insects. Upon closer inspection in the daylight, you could see the blood spotting spoor on the mattresses (no plastic covers) from the bedbugs.

We informed the proprietor of our experience, and that were would not be staying for the days we had scheduled. I feel bad that we did not write a review right away, because after perusing previous reviews, it looks like someone had the same experience as we did in Boat 2 a couple of weeks after we had the misfortune of staying there, and one can make the inference as to why the problem remained unresolved. We were very clear and forthright with the proprietor about the bedbug infestation and why we left and did not finish our stay.

He offered to move us to another boat, but keep in mind the boats are all closely lashed together, we took a pass. We reported our experience to the Better Business Bureau (he hasn’t responded to the complaint after receiving notice from BBB on August 18, 2012), the Chamber of Commerce, and the health department. We have traveled extensively, and this was the most abysmal experience we have ever had in 2 decades of travel, bar none. During the rest of our road trip, we were quarantining our clothes in garbage bags, burning time and money on washing machines/dryers, and making a close acquaintance of a family sized bottle of calamine lotion from the incessant itching of our inflamed bites. What was the worst was watching our kids suffer from the itching of their weeping wounds. A shame, really, because in theory, it sounds like a great idea, too bad the execution is lacking. Oh, free wi-fi, and the bedbugs are also gratis. The audacity of asking us for a positive review after subjecting us to that horror is just beyond the pale. Caveat emptor, consider yourself warned.

Room Tip: If you are an entomologist or pest control specialist, choose Boat #2. If anyone else, try somewher...

This is the second review posted by the same party which was prompted by our standard follow up letter to all our guests to write a review. The guest reported the problem and they were asked to relocate on another boat. The exteminators were called and the problem was resolved. Many hotels in south Florida are experiencing this problem as guests transport this problem from location to location. Hundreds of guests have stayed here since.

Boatel #5 is AWESOME!!! George was very accommodating when I needed to switch dates. The fellow who was maintaining the place (I'm sorry I don't remember his name) was friendly and helpful and incredibly hard worker. Houseboat #5 was immaculate and had a huge fridge, 2 TVs, and a kitchen equipped with everything needed to cook a full meal. My kids had a great time exploring the upper decks. When my parents came for a night there was room for the 5 of us to sleep comfortably. We were kind of done kayaking by the time we checked in but the kayaks were very tempting especially with the glistening moon out. THANK YOU SO MUCH, George, for providing such a unique lodging experience. We had a fabulous stay!
