“Great Place - give it a try”
Reviewed January 10, 2007

Arrived at this hotel on 29th December, and must admit once entering the grounds, didn't hold out much hope as there is major works going on to the road facing side. Checked in and got warm cookies which was a nice touch. Climbed the stairs with our suitcases (no lift) and was highly delighted with our room. Obviously newly refurbished (stayed on two occasions and other room was identical). Everything was brand new and nicely decorated. Starbucks coffee machine, microwave, fridge and drinks/granola bars/muffins delivered outside the door every morning along with the newspapers. Ample comfy pillows, flatscreen tv, thick towels the only thing I can think of was missing was bathrobes. Tiny sitting area on the bay, and a small pool, the tiki bar was newly opened on our 2nd visit. Never heard any noise at all from the workmen. We couldn't get ceiling fan to work (our fault) so rang for reception and maintenance was at the door within minutes. Try Key Largo coffee house 5 mins down road on other side, did wonderful breakfasts, Snappers is great for happy hour beside the water & also has great restaurant, & Coconuts bar - down the side of Holiday Inn, is a lively bar with a band on, or sit at the outside bar by the water. Randy will keep the drinks flowing. And the bar just past this place, 2 mins away on same street, did great value food in the bar it also has a restaurant upstairs. Caribbean bar seems to be where the locals drink, we spent New Years Eve there watching the fireworks, great night. Key Largo great place and wouldn't hesitate to stay at Doubletree. Please note that to get to any of these places you must use your car. Wish I was there now!

Stayed here 12/22/06 for 2 nights. I stay at 50 or more Hilton properties a year, and this Doubletree is not up to standards YET. To me a "Resort" invokes visions of a large free form pool, jacuzzi, pool bar, spacious grounds, restaurant, water sport activities, drinks on the beach, shopping, spa etc. There is none of that at this hotel.

If you view this hotel as just a Doubletree, then it has a lot of potential. The rooms are very nicely decorated, perhaps the best that I have seen at a Doubletree, but they are fairly small rooms, especially if you have 2 double beds. We had a second floor room close to the water. The other side of the hotel faces the parking lot. Note that there is NO elevator to the second floor. My kids liked the pool, but wished it was a little warmer and wanted a jacuzzi. They were also excited to see 4 Manatees just off the hotel boat dock.

There is still ongoing construction at the front of the hotel (restaurant), and landscaping going on (adding sod, and a bunch of beach sand).

Overall this is a nice hotel, with potential to be a very nice hotel, but never a "resort".

We checked out the Fish House across the street, but is seemed a bit pricey and fancy for a family with 2 kids. Instead we tried the Hobo restaurant about a 1/2 mile south of the hotel. It had a casual, bar atmosphere with good seafood at a cheaper price.

  • Liked — Room decor
  • Disliked — Construction and misuse of the term 'resort'
  • Tips/Secrets — Dont expect a resort, just a Doubletree. Pick a room opposite the parking lot.

We stayed in this hotel because we booked at the last minute and couldnt find anything that could accommodate us within a 200/night price range around the Florida Keys.

On the staff : The front desk clerk was quite rude and condescending. I would recommend that the manager send her to hospitality training as she needs to learn how to handle paying guests better. Our room also didnt get cleaned during the time we were there. I was told that I should have requested for it by the same front desk clerk -- which to me is a weird one.

The hotel is currently under renovation. The room is great and the bathroom as well is very clean and very new.

Tip: Ask for the complimentary breakfast. Also, stay on the second floor if you want to have a little privacy.

12/15/06: This was the old Howard Johnson and the lobby, restaurant & bar were still under construction, but there is a bar right across the street and a late night liquor store in Key Largo. Looks like it will be an awesome hotel once it is complete. The beach is not a swimming beach, but you are able to dock boats. Also, there is a nice mixture of mangroves and beach to check out on the property. The pool is nice, didn't use it. Biggest draw back of this hotel was the lack of a hot tub or spa. The continental breakfast baskets were very nice (starbucks coffee) and warm cookies on check in. The rooms are all granite, we had a king bed w/ couch which was perfect for a couple or 3 people. Each room has a small patio/balcony. Flat screen TVs and good cable selection. The bed was wonderful w/ down comforter but could have used softer sheets for such a nice bed. Nice microwave and refrigerator w/ a mini bar in the room. I would recommend staying here if you want something in Key Largo. The Fish House restaurant across the street was fabulous as well and not too overpriced. Our rate of week day $99/night was fantastic, but I bet it goes up once construction is completed.

  • Disliked — Lack of Hot Tub/Spa
  • Tips/Secrets — Good location: walking distance to restaurants & bars, right in Key Largo.

I chose this property based on trip advisor reviews and I am very glad I did. Because the construction is along the US1 edge of the property, I would have driven right by. had it not been for the reviews. This hotel is great. When it is complete, it will probably be one of the most expensive on Key Largo. The rates now, over Christmas vacation, are only around $120 a night. You can spend that on other old rundown musty motels down here. I am sitting right now at 5am , on my balcony overlooking the beautiful pool. The completely new rooms are upscale with featherbeds, cotton linens, 4 down pillows, down comfortor, and beautiful draperies. The small refrigerator and microwave came in handy for our leftovers from the fish house. The on site restaurant is not completed yet, but there are so many great places to eat , that its no big deal to me. They give you a nice basket of fruit and muffins, along with the Doubletree warm cookies. The tiki bar is also unfinished, but there is an informal bar area right on the bay and you can take a bottle of wine or some coronas down and watch the sunset. A manatee family stays in the waters along the property.
The bath has a marble countertop sink, with a hugh tiled shower and decent thick towels..
Room has a sofa bed, flat panel TV, and a great marble work station. Wireless access in all rooms, but if you leave your laptop at home, they have a desktop in the lobby.
The staff are friendly and helpful. They offered to help arrainge watersports and recommended some restaurants.
The hotel runs perpendicular to the road and the bay. Along one side of the building is the pool and a small waterway. The other side of the hotel is listed as garden view, but it is mostly parking lot view with nice landscaping. I would definately recommend the pool side.
We are here on the weekend, so there is no construction noise. I don't know how much of a problem that might be during the week. That construction is the only reason I gave this place a 4 rather than 5.

The room was very nicely redecorated and was very comfortable, staff was very friendly and helpful, and the breakfast basket that was provided was great. Unfortunately there were lots of small ants in our room. Staff was responsive and moved us to another room, but it gave me the heebie-jeebies. (Apprently the ants are quite common in the Keys.) Our second room also had lots of ants. Maybe this was a result of the construction -- which was extensive -- but it was unsettling.

The location of the hotel is great, and the pool area was very nice. The beach area is apparently a great place to see manatees.

Also be aware that there is no elevator, so you'll have to carry your luggage up the stairs. Also, our room did not have a bathtub -- only a shower -- which was a problem since we have a toddler. I'd love to stay here again in the future when the construction is finished. I'll just bring a can of Raid!

Our daughter is a travel agent and booked us 2 nights at this hotel. There is way too much construction around the hotel. Major renovations. The rooms and furnishings were very nice. It will be a lovely hotel when the work is done, until then stay somewhere else. We cancelled our 2nd night and went to Key west.
