All things considered, this is the best Hampton Inn we ever stayed at (and last count was 20+). There isn’t one staff member you will encounter that won’t go out of their way to greet you, hold a door, ask if they can assist/answer a question or satisfy a request. It is the closest hotel to Pennenkamp State Park and has its own beach with a tranquil bay.

We believe the outstanding housekeeping, front desk, building/grounds crew and breakfast staff are a reflection of the excellent general manager named Christina. Her positive, can-do attitude inspires each amazing employee. Nothing is too much trouble for Christina or her caring staff.

The only odd person we encountered was the Tiki Bar Bartender who doesn’t seem to be a full-time employee anyway. Never have we seen someone go to such lengths to be aloof. Still, please patronize him because he has a macaw bird that accompanies him to work and someone has to support this stunning bird! Thankfully, the bird has superior people skills just like Christina and her staff!

We were thrilled with our Room 146 which is toward the rear of the property and steps away from the bay beach. It was away from the pool, but right across from their excellent gym with a coin laundry. There are about 50 rooms per floor that go straight back to the bay.

This hotel isn’t the typical 3 or 4 stories Hampton Inn that you may see near airports. It is an older property that has been transformed to rival far more expensive resorts. We know because we researched and compared other local accommodations.

The rooms have a tropical décor with a galley pantry that includes a wet bar and good size refrigerator plus plenty of cupboard space. We never used the microwave, but it is standard size.

The bathroom has the latest fixtures, washstand and a glass roman shower, but is on the small size. It is accented with impressive tile work. While the shower may be the latest thing in bath design, we felt like a decent amount of water ended up on the floor and we wished for a little stronger water pressure. Still, this is a minor issue and we never mentioned it to the staff.

Breakfast was more than enough with something for every diet. Food was served at the proper temperatures, dishes were replenished immediately and coffee was fresh and plentiful!

Do not miss the beach with its calm waters to snorkel, kayak or swim/float around. You won’t have a problem finding a table and chairs or a chaise. All are in excellent condition which is also rare to find at resorts.

Snorkeling is very comfortable. The fish population isn’t huge, but we did see stingrays and a manatee.

The hotel pool is large enough for laps plus it starts at 3 feet and goes to 6 feet which is getting hard to find at hotels – most are glorified wading pools no deeper than 5 feet.

The building located to the south of the hotel/facing the bay houses the hotel gym with plenty of leading-edge cardio equipment plus a full set of free weights. There are also separate rest rooms available here plus 2 washers and 2 dryers. They each cost $1 and quarters and laundry detergent are available at the front desk. This building was open from 8 a.m. until 10 p.m., but the front desk also offered to adjust times if needed.

We fed lettuce to a family of iguanas on the north side lawn one morning plus later saw a manatee swimming back through that channel. Be on the lookout for stingrays when entering the water plus jellyfish that tend to looks like cauliflower underneath the water.

Check out the time for sunset when you visit and make sure you have a spot to sit and enjoy this Florida Keys End of Day Ritual!

My wife and I stayed in 3 of the Keys, and this location was by far our favorite! They excelled in every area and the beach/tiki bar area was like your own oasis away from it all! The room felt like we were on an island retreat (I guess we kind of were) and the staff was great! Shanquell at the front desk was very helpful and extremely friendly!

I love Paul!! He is good at putting a bigger smile on my face!! I was by myself and he can hold fun conversations. We all laughed and enjoyed ourselves with him. People like him are hard to find. He seems to really enjoy his job! Keep him around. Thanks Paul!!

I really like Hampton Inns. Especially this one.
We were given what the hotel considers a nice room, poolside first floor. On our second day, we realized that drying dive equipment meant leaving it on the porch, and we worried that some of our equipment might "walk away" if we just left it out. So I called the front desk, explained that we'd like to dry our gear on a second-floor porch, and within a minute, we had a new room, with a water view from the balcony and also a nice view of the pool and canal.
The rooms are very nice, a bit nicer than most Hampton Inn rooms. The bathroom is tastefully tiled, the beds are comfy, there is a sofa bed in our room as well as a king bed. Ceiling fans keep us comfortable, as well as (at least in the two rooms we have experienced) a strong air conditioning system. The decor is relaxing, very "key largo" in its informality.
The breakfasts were plentiful, and although we tried a few things we didn't find great (bread is, in this climate, generally a little stale, the fruit was surprisingly bland), the waffle machine made good waffles, and there was a nice selection of ready-made hot foods and cereals and pastries we did like. The pork sausages are actually outstanding.
One thing that surprised us in Florida was the lack of the golf channel in the TVs. But that is a minor problem. Having stayed in many hotels in this area, I think the Hampton Inn is my favorite.

Room Tip: If you need to dry dive gear, ask for a room on the second floor. I also recommend asking for the north-west facing rooms, as the south-east facing rooms overlook the parking lot.

We go to Key Largo for business purposes four times a year at least. We always stay here. The rooms are clean, the staff is so friendly, the breakfast is good, and the manatees that visit behind the hotel are a wonderful bonus! They are also pet friendly which is wonderful!!!

Room Tip: The first floor in the back of the property facing the gardens are nice and quiet....
