If you visit the Florida keys, especially Key Largo, John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park should be on your itinerary. The park entrance fee is stiff--$4.50 per person per day, not per car, even if you drive in. Far more expensive than a national park, but worth every penny. The glass bottom boat tour, run 3 times per day, is a must. Each tour runs 2.5 hours at 9:15, 12:15 and 3:15 (please check with the park for daily departure). The boat goes through the waterways surrounded by mangrove forests--the water is always calm there. Then the boat speeds up in the open to coral reef and then slows down for viewing from the glass bottom. Narration is excellent.

Great aquariums and accompanying film. While the beach was small, it was a nice place to enjoy some Florida sunshine.

We spent a couple hours here, there are some nice paths to walk that don't take long to explore. You can also snorkel there though we didn't so I can't report on it.

We paid $29 for a snorkelling trip and saw a lot of fish around the reef. Compared to the one I did in key west (Fort Zachary park) in August, I felt I saw less fish here..but still it was amazing. Luckily, we could see a turtle in this trip. We had wetsuits as the water was a bit cold (75F). You can rent it there like $6.
You can do snorkelling without taking a boat. The beach is rocky and can see a lot of small fish. This is a perfect activity for small kids.

I'm sure it's a wonderful place but one look at the $9 fee to get in, scared us away. Imagine being parents with (say) three kids!!
