“On the down side of the restaurant life cycle”
Reviewed October 29, 2011

We have been going to the Reef Grill for years. It started out extremely good with nice portions, fish was alway fresh and the service excellent. Now they are just average. We got the grilled calamari appitizer which was fine in quality but a very small portion for price. Fish was fine, except again but not worth the price. Service was good.

“Outstanding fresh seafood”
Reviewed July 5, 2011

This will always be our favorite restaurant because we love to eat seafood, prefer "tapas" over big meals and like the local feeling of the staff. The prices are reasonable. We love the grouper cheeks, grilled calamari, black bean cakes but really everything is great and the waiters are very good at helping you decide. They also have good wines by the glass that you can enjoy while waiting for your table if need be. We have never had a bad meal there.

“Excellent sea food in an informal setting”
Reviewed September 27, 2010

**NB: The Reef Grill (actually Captain Charlie's Reef Grill) is no longer located at 251 S. Highway 1; it has moved to Juno Beach -- about 10 minutes down the road from the previous location.** What most people say about the Reef Grill is true: the food is really good, the atmosphere feels "down homey," and the service is very efficient if not (in our experience) especially friendly. We dined on 4 appetizers (dolphin fingers, Cuban crab cakes, spicy fried calamari, and shrimp tempura -- the portions were very generous and we literally didn't have room for dessert). Of those, the dolphin fingers were fine but entirely ordinary, while the other appetizers were quite well done. The Cuban crab cake, in particular, which comes with black beans and rice and a chutney-like fruit garnish, was delicate and flavorful, if somewhat overwhelmed by the spicy calamari (we'd have done better to order the "regular" calamari rather than the spicy version). The coleslaw side dish is fresh and tasty, while the tartar sauce could benefit from a new recipe. The cocktail sauce, however, made with what tasted like horseradish, had a pleasant and unexpected kick. Prices are high-ish, but, as mentioned, the portions are large. Our waitress was on-the-spot, but clearly distracted and uninterested in wasting any human warmth on us. Next time we might try sitting at the bar: it looks like that's where a lot of action goes on and the bartenders seemed more personable than our server.

“Best fish in North Palm Beach County”
Reviewed April 3, 2010

Been eating here for 17 years, tried all the "imposters" and while a couple are very good, none are better than Reef (locals call it Captian Charlies)
Be prepared to wait during season; no reservations.

“Excellent!”
Reviewed August 10, 2009

This was as good as restaurants we have eaten in on the Gulf Coast. Not a tourist restaurant. Reasonably priced, casual, tasty, fresh seafood. We ate there 2 nights in a row. Early bird special 2 for $27.95 was great!
