“Glad I Went But No Need to Go Back”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 10, 2012

My husband & I love to take photos of new places and decided to make the trek to see the Jupiter Lighthouse. We did arrive late, thinking we didn't need more than an hour to climb up and enjoy the views. Upon arrival, we were told that because it is an active Coast Guard base, we would have to take the guided tour and were not allowed to wander around on our own. Not a big deal so we had to hurry to catch up with our guide. Last tour leaves the museum at 4pm so don't be late otherwise you won't be able to climb the lighthouse. The tour guides are younger, not sure if they are volunteers, and they are very pleasant and informative. The view from the top is a little disappointing. I have made the trek to other lighthouses and they typically have delightful views. All in all, we didn't really take too many photos and although I'm glad we went, I really wouldn't feel the need to visit again.

“"Ummmmmm"...A pretty good experience”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 9, 2012

UMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM.

Well, my only complaint is that our tour guide (who was a kid) said UMMMM so much, that my friend and I started counting. We stopped our count after about 85.

The tour guides are all pretty much just kids; though they couldn't be nicer and are pretty informative, they are very informal with the way they lead their tours. They wanted to have that authority and respect, but since they were kids, people just weren't giving them that 100%.

The lighthouse was so cool..hiking up to it didn't take too long...maybe 5 minutes. When you get to the top, you experience wonderful views of Jupiter Island. Try and spot Tiger Woods' mansion!

If you climb to the top of the lighthouse, you get a sticker and a certificate, which is a really nice touch.

Our tour guide couldn't have been nicer, but with more experience, he could be really good!

Would recommend to friends!

“Neat OLD lighthouse”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 7, 2012

Worth the walk up the staircase to the top. The view is spectacular, so bring a camera too. Take a pic of your partner as you walk up the staircase...pretty neat! The amount of glass or crystal in the light amazed me....lots of windex to keep it clean...enjoy!

“History Overlooked”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 5, 2012

The National Park Service blundered big time when passing over the historic Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse as a National Historic Landmark (NHL) in favor of a lighthouse farther north that was built almost two decades later. The policy that only one lighthouse in Florida could be designated a NHL was silly to begin with; there are already more than 2,500 NHL's so why would it hurt to have two lighthouses? On the beach near the site of the Jupiter Light Quaker merchant Jonathan Dickinson was shipwrecked in 1696, ultimately leaving us a valuable early description of the Native Americans here. Archaeological digs in the immediate vicinity of the lighthouse reveal a very long occupancy of this site. The lighthouse itself was built before the Civil War by George Meade, who became the Union commander at Gettysburg. How much history do you need to become a national landmark?

The light itself continues to be run by the U.S. Coast Guard but the lighthouse is maintained by the local historical society, which conducts informative tours and has a museum nestled in a former CG building near the lighthouse. Call ahead or check the website for tour times, fees, and minimize height of children allowed to climb the lighthouse. Views from the top are terrific!

“Take the Tour”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 29, 2012

To really appreciate this site, you need to take a tour. The guides give an excellent tour. You will learn about the history of the lighthouse and the role the complex played during World War II.
