“Another great stay”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 9, 2013 via mobile

Despite the weather being less than hospitable (50s and 60s) we were very happy with our second visit to the Great Heron Inn. We had a room on the 2nd floor overlooking the pool which we couldn't use as it wasnt heated. Our room was spotlessly clean and fresh smelling. Although they cannot guarantee non smoking accommodations, we were given a non smoking room. It is very convenient having a full kitchen complete with dishes and appliances.
Only complaint was the beds. Both the double (too soft) and the twin bed (too hard) were very uncomfortable.

This is an old-style, 2-story cinderblock motel right on the beach near Clearwater. At about $100 a night the beachfront and convenience to shopping and restaurants was perfect for us. We were welcomed warmly by the ladies in the front office and delighted to find a lending library for guests as well as a number of coupons for local restaurants. When we got to our room, things were even better: an "apartment style" layout with living room, eat-in kitchen, bedroom and ample bath. All were spotless, with extra pillows and blankets in the closet. Didn't use the pool but enjoyed the deck behind the building as well as the Adirondack chairs to use on the beach. Wish we could have stayed longer. If we ever go back we will ante up an extra few bucks for a second floor room as ours was a little noisy at times because it was the first one everyone walked past to get to their rooms.

Many years ago I stayed in the sister property to this one, long gone to developers of condos so I was excited to return to the area and relive bygone days and happy to see the present owners did not sell out for a high rise. As others have mentioned this is an old syle "U" shaped motel on the beach, two level efficiency rooms and small pool. Our room was basic and clean offering a good value in a great location. Many guests return year after year including snowbirds from Canada so folks we met knew each other from past visits and often gathered outside for a beer late afternoon. Living on the west coast where all of our facilities are smoke free, I am always a bit taken aback when I visit a place like this that still permits smoking so be forewarned. If I understood the sign in our room properly, they discourage but do not prohibit smoking in rooms so you might catch a whiff inside as well as out. Also keep in mind with such a small place shaped in a U you will hear any noise in the courtyard from loud conversations to pool fun, was quiet for us but I can imagine with the right mix of people and kids it might be a bit loud. The beach was wonderful and right out front so immediate access. This place is close to many stores and restaurants including Clearwater beach so very convenient but the whole area has become one huge overdeveloped mass of condos and time shares some as big as a Las Vegas hotel! All in all this is a great place to experience what old Florida used to be and is now hard to find. Rates are reasonable and the beach/water inviting so bring the family and enjoy the hospitality Tina and staff provide.

Room Tip: I recommend the second floor as close to beach as possible.

My wife and I visited relatives in central Florida and then went to Indian Rocks beach for relaxation. We chose Great Heron Inn because of the good reviews it received on TripAdvisor, We were not disappointed. It is a small u-shaped motel right on the beach. Our room was on the second floor and was closest to the water. We had a great view of the beach and the gulf from our window. The room was very clean and was more like a small apartment with full kitchen, living room with TV, bath and bedroom with 1 double and 1 single bed.
The staff was pleasant and the place was quiet and peaceful. It is close to good restaurants and shopping. I recommend the Great Heron Inn.

We just returned from the Great Heron a few days ago, and I can't wait to return! Although this was our first visit, I sure hope it isn't our last. Teena and her staff, especially Susan, are constantly on the move cleaning and keeping everything in great shape. We stayed in one of the gulf front rooms and there is nothing better than opening the windows in the morning and hearing the surf lapping the shore. The motel is more like separate apartments with good sized rooms and a surprisingly well equipped kitchen. There was even a big glass pitcher for making lemonade or iced tea! The beds were a twin and a full size and encased in the plastic protectors to protect against bedbugs. I know this is a necessity, but I found it made the beds really hot by morning, That would be my only complaint. Each room has two chairs and a small table outside your door and is a great place to just sit and relax. They also provide loungers on the deck or Adirondak chairs in the sand if you prefer. Our sole purpose was to get away and relax, and be on noone's schedule but our own. We came home refreshed and recharged, which often is not the case on vacation. The one thing that really impressed me was the fact that there was a definite family feel among the guests. Everyone chatted with each other, and we learned that many people come there year after year to meet up with friends they've made from previous years. You don't find that comraderie very often! And maybe most importantly, I felt safe here. It was quiet and I never was afraid to go out on the deck in the evening alone to listen to the waves or gaze at the stars. There are plenty of restaurants up and down Gulf Blvd to choose from if you don't want to cook. I'm so glad I read the reviews here and chose this property, It really is a great escape! Oh, and don't miss Harry the Heron when he comes for his fish in the morning. Even he is a joy to watch!

This place was found due to trip advisor reviews. When we arrived, it felt like an old motel like days of old but when we entered our room we were pleasantly surprised. There was a seperate living room and kitchen from the bedroom. The room had been updated and was very clean. The bed was comfortable and good size bedroom. If you are a big sports fan, the TV is an old tube TV. It was good size but not a modern LCD larger screen. The best thing about this place is its location. Right on the beach. Great walks on the beach and tremendous sunsets. Lots of restaurants around and the 80 degree pool was also enjoyable. Owers were very nice and freindly and would definately go back there when we are in that area. Also, Harry the Heron greets you every morning.

We just got back from several days at the Great Heron Inn. Everyone was so nice, friendly and willing to help in any way they could. It was quiet, right on the Gulf and convenient to several eating establishments. The rooms were large, kitchen fully equipped and they had great water pressure in the shower. Will return for sure!!
