“Good food and service”
Reviewed April 30, 2012

Food was excellent, but there are few choices for the non-seafood lover.

“Possible Seafood poisoning, Overpriced, and "Gotcha Pricing"”
Reviewed March 28, 2012

We visited Islands Fish Grill on our last night on vacation on March 26th, 2012 with my 6 year-old daughter and my mother. Admittedly, I'm not a fish eater but I do eat shellfish so I was optimistic that I might find something on the menu that I would like. We were the first ones in the restaurant for dinner that evening as it was approximately 5:45 p.m. on a Monday evening and there wasn't anyone else in the dining room when we were seated. From the onset, I was immediately turned off because the water glasses were clearly spotted and I mean every one of them on the table. That is not acceptable at a restaurant and certainly not one at this price level. The menu was rather short and it was clear from the beginning that this was an expensive restaurant as nearly all of the fish entrees were in the $20 to $30+ price range. I searched for a shellfish meal but the only one that I saw contained mussels and I'm not a fan of mussels; which turned out to be a really good thing---more on that later. So I ordered a humble bowl of black bean soup together with an $8 Caesar salad that the menu proclaimed was "the best in the area", or something to that effect. I asked the server if the kitchen could add chicken (a common request with salads) and she indicated that that would not be a problem. My mother had been wanting to eat mussels and seized upon an $8 mussel appetizer for her meal. My daughter ate the ubiquitous chicken fingers with sweet potato fries. All of our meals were quite good. The server was quite friendly and knowledgeable about the specials and so forth. She also checked on us several times even though the restaurant began to fill up rapidly after we had started eating. The atmosphere was good considering the place was essentially located in a small storefront (think small strip mall). According to the server, the owners were "world travelers" and brought back several items to decorate the interior to nice effect. Things went downhill quickly when we received the bill. The price to add chicken to my $8 Caesar salad was an additional $8....I felt that this was excessive given that it doubled the price of the item and believed that the server should have mentioned the price if it was going to double the cost of the item. However, it's really my responsibility to ask about pricing (I suppose) so I did not say anything. Another little surprise was my mother's small glass of house Chardonnay that she was charged $7 for! After paying the bill, I couldn't help but think that because we had "only" ordered appetizers that the place had arbitrarily charged an excessive amount for adding the chicken to pad the bill. To make things worse, my mother began to feel ill Monday evening and after doing some research on the internet, she is positive that she contracted food poisoning from the mussels! I won't go into her symptoms but it's pretty clear that given her condition and the onset of said symptoms, that she had indeed contracted some form of food poisoning. To be fair and out of concern for others, I contacted the restaurant the following day to explain what had happened to the manager so that she and the rest of the staff were aware of the issue. I was very polite and made no demands for a refund---I simply told the manager that I thought that she should know of the issue. The manager was very appreciative of the feedback and said that she would check into it. (If I were the manager, I would have taken the opportunity to send us a gift certificate or made some other allowance, but that's my take on customer service). We liked the food the best---the mussels were quite good according to my mother; (apparently the food poisoning did not affect the taste if in fact it was indeed food poisoning). And my Caesar salad was quite good as well--price for added chicken notwithstanding. Obviously we liked least the possible food poisoning (I want to be very clear that none of us are qualified to positively say for sure that it was food poisoning---we are very educated people with advanced degrees but not in anything vaguely related to food poisoning. Furthermore, the information that my mother reviewed from the internet indicated that it is difficult for even doctors to diagnose food poisoning from shellfish so I do not want to go on the record as saying unequivocally that that was the case---it is merely a very educated guess based on information gathered from well-respected sources. However, I can say with certainty that I felt that charging me 8 bucks to add chicken to an 8 dollar salad is ridiculous. Given the fact that Caesar salads are so commonly "upgraded" with chicken, shrimp or other proteins, I believe that the place should have disclosed the price on the menu as most places do. If in fact it was not food poisoning, I would have given the place 2 or perhaps 3 "stars." However, as consumers, we have the right to expect that our food will be prepared and served correctly and without potentially life threatening foodborne contagions. I cannot recommend this place at this point in time.
