The resort is old. The vertical blinds did not close all the way so a lot of light entered the room so sleeping in was not an option. The beds were not comfortable. The room came with a microwave and mini fridge. No hair dryer in the room, bathroom needs remodeling. Very loud, walls are thin. The Monkey Bar offered good prices on drinks and you could see Monkey Island from the dock. Walking distance to McRae's, close to Homosassa Springs State Park. Not many choices to stay in the area, it was tolerable for a weekend.

First, we typically frequent the east coast and lower mid-state and had never before ventured to this part of Florida. If you enjoy nature, minimal tourist traffic and less exposed retirement communities, then Citrus County is definitely for you.

We (husband, adult daughter & I) stayed January 5-8, 2011 in a spacious 2 bedroom 2 full bathroom river front villa (Room 206) and had a room that appeared to be brand new, super clean, completely stocked kitchenette and surprisingly comfortable beds. The property was well-maintained, clean and quiet. My husband and I enjoy nature photography and I sat on one of the piers for hours with my camera (pictures attached).

The restaurant was very good and the size of alcoholic beverages very generous for the price. Their clam chowder was a favorite. The weather was too cold for enjoying the pool, but it looked well-maintained and of an appropriate size.

The only negative I can identify (and there should always be one since nothing is perfect) was that their washer and dryer located in the laundry building was absolutely worthless. No final spin and rinse and no heat in the dryer. So, dry your beach towels in your room unless those common-area appliances have been repaired.

We swam with hundreds of manatees via Captain Mike's Sunshine River Tours (who had a heated houseboat and brand new suits and snorkeling gear) and had an awesome time there as well.

We ventured to a small state park in Bayport along the Gulf Coast and photographed bald eagles, dolphins and more from the pier.

On the day we left for home, we enjoyed a few hours at the Homosassa Springs Wildlife Park. I very highly recommend this place as well. It is a fantastic wildlife rescue sanctuary with a variety of native birds, wildlife and manatees. It is small and extremely well-maintained with animals almost close enough to touch.

I would actually consider moving to the Homosassa Springs area and look forward to our next stay at the Homosassa Riverside Resort.

We chose this resort for location and stayed in the building away from the river, I am not sure what the riverview rooms are like but across the parking lot the rooms are old, dated and in dire need of renovation. the restauraunt was great and watching the monkey's was fun. the staff was good in giving messages etc as there are no phones in the room

Extreme Noise. There are picnic areas thru out the resort which in theory is fine. In actuality, at least during Scallop Season, these areas are outdoor party areas where the Dually crowd slugs down beer and liquor and screams non-stop. I don't mean talk or converse. I mean screams and howls. Say anything about it at midnight and they look at you like you just landed from Mars. It's not so much the resort and staff but the clientele. Now, on the other hand, if you enjoy a rowdy redneck weekend on the river. This is your spot. And, this review is no fluke, we have tried the Riverside 3-4 times as well as other places in and around Homosassa. Be fore-warned.

The location of this hotel on the Homosassa River is its best feature. Our family of five had a one-bedroom suite with full kitchen facing the water, which was really pleasant. The onsite restaurant was wonderful - if you have time for a long, leisurely dinner, the seafood feast for 4 is a delicious and incredible value. The upstairs bar features a live band every night covering a lot of southern rock tunes, which we could hear clearly in our room and did not appreciate, but they ended reasonably early. (Could be a problem for younger kids, though). Monkey Island is fun to see, especially if you take a kayak out on the river and get a closer look (and btw the service and equipment at the onsite boat rental facility were excellent).
Unfortunately, the bathtub in our room was in terrible condition - the surface was badly pitted. Also, one day our room was not made up at all despite the fact that we were out of the room for a solid five hours in the middle of the day.
Overall, there is much to enjoy here, but it is overpriced for the quality of accommodations provided ($150/night, $180 Fri and Sat).
Not hotel related, but worth knowing: The main draw in this area is swimming with manatees, but what they don't tell you is that this is a seasonal winter activity. During our trip at the beginning of November, we saw very few.

If you like the feel of olde FL and the convience of modern day this is the place. Good food, outdoor activities (includes great fishing), riverfront location, onsite restaurant, bar, manatee tours and of course Monkey Island . All this and reasonable rates too.

The Riverside Resort is just really cool! They offer suites with seperate living, sleeping areas and full kitchens. I think they also have more "typical hotel rooms," but we didn't see those. On the property, there is a pool, marina, restaurant, and bar. But, the coolest thing is Monkey Island, sitting just outside the restuarant in the river, which is home to several spider monkeys. You can charter a fishing trip or take an airboat ride, rent a kayak or just enjoy the scenery. Although we were only there for a weekend, we will definitely be going back for a longer stay and doing some fishing!
