Description: Restaurant/Bar in an old seafood freezer on the water where boats bring in their fresh catch. Amazing shrimp, fish dip and stone crabs. A lot of local controversy around restaraunt so it is becoming very popular.

I am one of the "locals" that frequent the freezer. If you want fancy service, white table cloths and fancy dishes, do not go to The Freezer! It is a "locals" hang out with friendly people, good food at reasonable prices and owners who are always on hand to say hello to the newbies. It is a bar so if you do not like noise or people having a good time around you this this is not for you! (I drink iced tea). On a couple recent trips to Savannah, Charleston, and St Augustine we did not find any place as friendly as The Freezer and we did not find better seafood at any price. We were homesick for our Freezer! If you want to meet fun interesting people from all walks of life, enjoy good food served casual, bartenders that will likely remember your name, cold beer (or iced tea) then this is the place for you. If not, then maybe the Homosassa atmosphere is not for you. Try Charleston, it was very much upscale and downright unfriendly.

Winter months this place is too crowded for our taste. Enjoy coming in the other months. Many times we get the peel and eat shrimp to go. It is an actual freezer... no air-conditioning, very laid-back, fun to come by boat.

This out-of-the-way eatery has good food and great times. Don't expect fine dining with china plates. However, if you want tasty seafood and enjoyable ambiance, this is the place for you. the beer is cheap and everyone seems to be having a good time.

We heard about this hidden gem from a patron of another nearby restaurant. He said the food was reasonably priced and the servings generous. So, when we had company, off we went to explore the quirky, Old Florida aspects of this eatery. Having read other reviews, I sorta knew what to expect. All was true! Dirt parking lot, bare concrete, metal walls (it REALLY was a freezer!), and home-town, laid back atmosphere. We put in our order and found a table inside since out in the Tiki bar it was crowded. We then realized ... since this is a BAR ... everywhere someone was smoking either cigarettes or stinky cigars!! I had not been in a place that allows smoking while eating in so long that at first, we all just did not grasp it. It was everywhere! We left the table for a far corner of the Tiki Bar with a good view of the river. Alas, the folks next to us lit up and we were gasping for air. The shrimp and the slaw were great,(steamed, not fried and no french fries available), but we could barely eat a bite without a waft of smoke. So... be warned and if that is an issue with your group, perhaps avoid this "Old Florida" treasure.

Visited yesterday afternoon around 2 pm to avoid lunchtime rush. The whole order of easy peel steamed shrimp was more than enough for my wife and I to share. It was a little over $20. Coleslaw was good and only $1 each. Add in two cold beers and the total, including tax, was $26 and change.

This is not the place for gracious dining or romance. But it is kind of cool. Food gets served quickly (it does not take long to steam shrimp to start with). I was a little disappointed that there was no clam chowder left. But at $2.50 each it was not surprising that the lunch customers ate it all up. And the cook had not had time to make more.

We will go back to try the crabs and other offerings, even though the menu is very limited. It's good food and generous portions and fair prices. It is sort like having a picnic in a bar. But just a little bit rustic. If rustic turns you off, then definitely do not go.
