Four of us, all at or just beyond the 70 years of age mark, decided to give this a try. In particular, my wife who had knee replacement surgery 7 months ago, was very nervous. We spent about 20 minutes in the parking lot getting trained/acclimated. Within minutes, each of us had enough confidence to head out. What a blast. Balancing is not a problem; steering is pretty easy; the toughest thing is keeping in check the feeling of superiority you have as you zoom by the walkers and even the bikers. What a great way to tour part of the island.
Casey, our tour leader, is an example of the entrepreneurial spirit in practice. Four years ago she packed up and left Kansas; found a job on Anna Maria Island; purchased and runs the Zegway by the Bay business; wrote and published a book; and, now is starting up a radio station on the island. It is great to see such ambition.
Tips: If you don't like the heat, set up a reservation for early in the morning; we began at 9am. Bring you bike helmet; if you don't have one, a sanitized helmet is provided; wear flat shoes or go bare-foot; don't bring young kids...liability insurance requires that riders be at least 14 years of age; enjoy.
We have no experience with Segways so I cannot say that this is the best or the worst but, I do know that we very much enjoyed this experience and I do not hesitate to recommend it.
