My wife and I were looking for a relaxing beach vacation. This hotel is right on the beach and boardwalk so we couldn't have asked for more. We stayed in an Ocean Front room as a last minute upgrade for a reduced price. Overall we were happy with the hotel; but that being said, we got the vacation as part of a packaged sale and got the upgrade for relatively less money. Had we paid full price, our review may have dropped to 3/5. Be sure to read our tips and review of Hollywood, FL at the end.

The Hotel & Staff:
The grounds are well kept. It is not the newest of the facility but it is still nice. The hotel is literally on the beach and boardwalk. They have a indoor/outdoor restaurant with outside bar. We cannot comment on the pool as we traveled 1200mi for the ocean...not chlorinated water. 98% of the staff are extremely friendly and go out of their way to say hello.

One con of it being on the boardwalk is that it can get quiet noisy. We had a 4th floor room that would get much of that noise (more info below).

The Room:
The room was very nice. The ocean front room is on the corner, so you get two balconies. The ocean balcony is spacious and a relaxing place to sit and watch the sunrise. We stayed in 401 which is on the north side of building. Bathroom had granite counters, the shower was walk-in and nicely built. The bed was very comfy. The room had a safe and a mini fridge both hid-away in the dresser.

There were some minor things broken about the room (some holes in curtains, electric outlet was loose, etc), but they were minor and did not detract from the trip. What was an issue was the noise. The boardwalk can get very noisy with entertainment going on. Both the hotel bar and a tiny tiki-bar to the north play live music often. Our room was literally right over both. After a long day of travel we tried to take a nap on the first day, but the bass from live-entertainment at the hotel bar was so intrusive it was next to impossible. It seems the worst noise is over the weekend.

****TIPS*****
Upgrade to ocean front room as high as a floor as possible, and definitely no lower than 4. The 3rd floor gets obstructed by trees. Not only are the views worth it, but you get concierge service (Sun. night through Fri. morning) in the penthouse which includes: good breakfast (hot items, cereal, fruit etc.), h'orderves (fried finger foods, cheese and crackers, salad, etc.), and desserts. You can also go up anytime and get soft drinks and water which is a huge plus. Go to breakfast and h'orderves early, it seemed to be best before 8am and 6pm respectively.

When walking the boardwalk, 97% of everything is to the south (take right onto boardwalk). We walked the first night going north and saw mostly hotels and wondered where everything was.

If possible, avoid booking over the weekend. It was significantly noisier on Sunday and progressively got worst Wed and Thur. Also, no concierge services are provided over the weekend (Fri evening through Sunday morning). The beaches are also empty during the week.

There is an everglades/ alligator tour that will pick you up from the hotel for about $60 a person. Al is really nice guy and the boat ride was nice. A few alligators swam right up to the boat. And then there is a short alligator wrestling show afterwards.

****HOLLYWOOD, FL TIPS****
We had mixed reviews about the location itself. It seems a lot of development is still going on, and it will be interesting to see how it is in a few years. As of 08/2015 it seems to be more of a family location then couples spot. But if you are going for primarily the beach, you won't be disappointed.

The beaches and boardwalk themselves are excellent. There are lifeguards and frequent shower stations to rinse off. Palm trees line the back of the beach. Its very picturesque. The walk itself is very nicely constructed as well.

The quality of business on the other hand are severely lacking. There are only a few good restaurants. Most seemed to be shady, cheap quality places that need to have servers lure you in from the boardwalk. Definitely read reviews before eating at any place. We enjoyed: Taco Spot, Nick's, and Bonny& Read's. The shops are lacking as well. They are either: A) Overpriced cheap t-shirt and gag gift shops, or B.) Decent quality, but then severely over priced.

The entertainment is hit or miss. There were a few good performers but most others I would qualify as glorified karaoke. That is, they literally were singing karaoke, or would play guitar over it once and a while.

Things to do are also family-geared. There are many bike rentals. My wife and I did it, and it was fun to ride the whole boardwalk. They also rent out these three-wheeled recumbent bikes that kids ride (mostly unattended) and they are a huge nuisance. We were almost got hit at least a half-dozen times.

You can take a trolley into town for $1 each ride. However, there is not much to do in-town that we saw either. However, we did not explore all of downtown. There are a lot of nice homes to look at during the ride.

Overall it I would say it is a family spot, or mostly beach spot. In the end my wife and I had a wonderful time and it will be interesting to see how Hollywood is in a few years.

Room Tip: Ocean front rooms offer best views, get added amenities, but get as high as floor as possible.

Just return from a stay here and loved it!! Everyone was so friendly and helpful! Rooms were clean and comfortable! I would definately return. Only downside is the parking fee. I feel if you are staying at the resort/hotel there should not be a fee?

I moved to this hotel on a Saturday afternoon after a brief stay on South Beach. I mistakenly believed that this would be a quiet location away from the craziness of Miami.

The hotel was absolutely packed and the small pool area was over-flowing with screaming kids. At 1pm in the afternoon the pool was completely packed and there were no vacant chairs available in the pool area or surrounding deck. The beach in front of the property was also packed.

There is a really nice outdoor bar and restaurant overlooking the pool .and beach, and they did have live musicians entertaining in the pool area.

Check-in is at 3pm, and on a crowded weekend, don't expect to get into your room before 3pm. I arrived at the hotel at 1pm, and did not get into a room until almost 4pm.

This is an older Marriot and it could really use a major renovation. Despite an aging appearance, the hotel was very clean and every team member I met was incredibly warm and accommodating. Excellent service and hospitality throughout the hotel. I ordered room service for breakfast, and I received a fresh and hot full breakfast within 20 minutes on Sunday morning during peak breakfast service.

I would not recommend this hotel for couples looking for a quiet and romantic get-a-way, but it is a great destination for families.

Room Tip: Request an ocean front room or room overlooking the pool.

Thanks for your opinions of us. Summertime is very busy for us and so is the entire city since all kids are out of school. We are a very quiet hotel several months of the year, so come back and try us then. We have some exciting changes coming soon, so check on back with us. Cheers!

Another great stay at this Marriott. It is directly on the boardwalk. Close to shops, plenty of places to eat. You can rent skates, all kinds of bikes. Lots of activity going by. The pool guys are fantastic. The parking garage is a rip off - but you on the beach so they can get away with it.

Room Tip: Get up higher - most rooms have great views. Ocean and intercoastal waterway on all sides.

This is the nicest place to stay on the beach and a comfortable place to stay in the Fort Lauderdale area. This was my fourth stay there - starting almost 20 years ago. The beach is still beautiful. The rooms have recently been renovated and look good. I will keep coming back
