“Excellent and Authentic German Food”
Reviewed October 16, 2012

The German Restaurant has excellent and authentic German/Bavarian food. I've been to both Germany and Austria and so I know authenticity. It has has a wonderful selection of German beers. The wait staff were excellent and knowledgeable of the menu. The atmosphere is quaint and homey. I would recommend this restaurant.

This place is the real deal...awesome food, clean place, great friendly service...
Dinner specials are a good deal if you can get there before 6pm, and the desserts... mmmm
Coffee was delicious too!

Staff were rude at best. They offer specials and then frown when you order the. Portions are small. Food is bland. Lacking all the way around. Would never recommend his restaurant to anyone!

The absolute best German restaurant this side of the Atlantic. If you go home hungry, you must not have ordered anything! Portions are huge even on the $7.95 Early Bird specials from 4-6 pm.

“GREAT SERVICE, Below par food”
Reviewed September 2, 2012

We visited The German Restaurant for a new experience in the bay area and were disappointed by the food, except for one dish. By way of background, my wife is of German descent and had many German meals growing up. We know German food can be flavorful and has more to offer than just wurst. I get the opportunity to eat at domestic German restaurants when on travel. We were a party of 4 and ordered potato pancakes appetizer, and dinners of the German Sampler Platter, Cordon Bleu vom Haehnchen, Wiener Kalbs Schnitzel, and Haehnchengeschnetzeltes "Zuercher Art". Drinks were the Dunkel bier, house Riesling, ice tea, and soda. Desserts; Apple Strudel, Pears Helene, and Icee Kaffee for a total bill of ~ $160. Prices were fair; service was FANTASTIC, food disappointing. The ONLY dish that I would recommend is the Haehnchengeschnetzeltes "Zuercher Art". The mushroom cream sauce and tender chicken were wonderful. The Cordon Bleu Haehnchen and Weiner Kalbs Schnitzel were flavorless, as were the potato dumpling and spaetzle. And the "French fries" were tater tots! The sampler platter had Sauerbraten (no pickling flavor), roast pork (no roast flavor) smothered in different brown sauces - if it wasn't for the sauce there would be no flavor. The platter also had a pork schnitzel - again no flavor and too heavily breaded. The wurst was great, as was the red cabbage, sauerkraut and potato salad. I was concerned at the beginning when our potato pancake starter came out - it was made with frozen string potatoes like Denny's uses for breakfast. As for the deserts, the pears Helene were very good - excellent presentation and tasty, the Icee Kaffee was smooth, flavorful and unique. The Apple Strudel was smothered in a lemon sauce; it was soggy and flavorless. As for our drinks - all were good. The Dunkle Bier was outstanding and the house Riesling refreshing and crisp. As I said earlier - the service was fantastic. The staff was very courteous and attentive. The decor has a lot of German nic-naks at the table and throughout the restaurant giving it a nice German feel.
