Only at The Port in “suburban” Haines City do you have to pay $7.99 for Alligator Bites, an appetizer to enhance delightful seafood, salads, pastas, and yummy steaks and chicken—whatever floats your boat. Compared to restaurants that overload plates, The Port has reasonably sized portions, what you’d expect in Europe. Not all Americans eat more than they need. I had the Early Bird grilled mahi-mahi served with a vegetable melody and baked sweet potato for $9.99, the most expensive Early Bird item. A chicken breast “cooked your way” is only $7.99, but Early Bird specials end at 6:00. Both interior air-conditioned seating and exterior screened areas have phenomenal views of Lake Hatchineha. Recorded music is a bit too loud, but after a few of The Port’s specialty cocktail, “Whipped Sunset” that Ali from Solivita holds in the photo below, who cares? Whipped Sunset is grenadine, pineapple juice, whipped cream, and vodka. Yum…sounds like a dessert, but that came in the form of the “Orange Kist Cheesecake” depicted in the photo.
Service staff, Daran, Dawn, Joey, Paige, and Russell on a Tuesday night were courteous and efficient. I never had to request a water refill. As guests poured in and service slowed for late comers, an impressive lake view made the time pass too quickly. The Port does not rush guests out the door, we sat long after finishing the meal and enjoyed waning sunlight, but there is no sunset view over the water.
