'Happened' on this place as we drove through Gulfport. Having lived in Texas, this LOOKED like the genuine article and we were not disappointed. We shared the Sampler platter which included two sides. With a beer, each, our total was just over $19.00 There was so much meat we took home a rib, enough brisket for a dinner salad, and a roll (rolls seem to be 'home made' ... haven't had THAT in a while)! Everything was tender with just enough sauce. Prices and quantities made up for ma and pa 'atmosphere' inside, it's how tasty and good that would have you stopping back in here again or getting take-out if you were going through this part of town. The fellows working in the kitchen (who offered to wipe our table when we sat in the small dining room) worked hard and spoke highly of this operation which also says a lot about a place. I wish this couple continued success.

We took out ribs, pulled pork, coleslaw, beans, and macaroni and cheese. All were delicious, with the exception of the bland mac and cheese. The pulled pork and barbecue sauce, in particular, were outstanding. Went back a second time during our five-day visit to Gulfport.

We did takeout...we live nearby. Unbelievable portions for price paid. The chicken was unbelievably juicy. The BBQ sauces excellent. The sides all very good. The ribs, alas, were overdone. We are willing to forgive this one last bit, suspecting we may have just hit upon an unfortunate timing. We'll give it a try again....if the ribs are overdone again, we will re-review it accordingly.

Its not easy to miss this place as it is right on the main drag. I ordered a pork brisket with baked beans. Done just right. We sat outside. A bit noisy with traffic and such as we were there when school let out. Good BBQ and hope to return someday when we get back to Gulfport.

Upon the request of one of our family members, I searched for a BBQ place near Treasure Island and found very few that were strictly devoted to BBQ. We arrived at Smokin J's to see a small house turned restaurant with a take out window and smoke shack in the "garage". The owners, John and Lisa, were manning the place and were very helpful in recommending dinners for our party of 6. Lots of choices for a small, family run kitchen. We found a table (I think there were maybe 5 total tables inside and several picnic tables outside as well), and before long our dinners started being delivered to us. Though they were not delivered all at once, those without food could munch on the delicious pickle chips provided at the tables. Everyone was pretty much awestruck by their dinners. The portions were huge and everything had a great smoky tenderness to which we added our own choice of sauce at the table. I had a sample platter that included ribs, brisket and pulled pork. All amazing! The side choices were 50/50 as far as taste. The coleslaw and BBQ beans were everyone's favorites. The Jalapeño cornbread muffins were great. The regular baked beans, rolls provided and potato salad, frankly, were not great. Not that it mattered much since we were there for MEAT, PORK and CHICKEN and we got plenty of that!
We ended up taking home a full box of food, so we certainly could have shared a few entrees and been fine. Our only complaint was that it was so good, we all ate too much and had some tummy aches that night....completely our own fault but how can you stop when it is that good!
