Owner description: TropicBird offers the only naturalist-led ecotours of the 10,000 Islands under sail. We specialize in full day luxury private sailing charters deep into the 10,000 Islands. Our philosophy is to go softy. We hoist the sails as soon as we can. We want you to relax, unwind and enjoy the water sliding by and get a taste of cruising life. You can help crew the boat as much or as little as you like. Guests will see, hear and experience nature as intended in complete comfort with only the gurgle of water and gentle breezes across the very stable deck of our 34’ catamaran, TropicBird, as she slips through the pristine 10,000 Islands, where the western Everglades meet the Gulf of Mexico. Due to TropicBird’s exceptional shoal draft (just 18”) she can really reach the back waters. It’s a full day experience with an excellent lunch, wine, beer and all refreshments included.

We heard and read so much about the catamaran charter – TropicBird out of Goodland, FL that when our son and daughter-in-law came for Thanksgiving we decided this was a perfect time to make our own adventure aboard the TropicBird.
We were greeted warmly on the dock and escorted to the boat by Captain Patrick Higgins and his wife Martha. Once aboard, coffee and pastries were served while Patrick gave us a brief overview of the 10,000 Islands National Wildlife Refuge and the Rookery National Estuarine Reserve.
It’s true what they say on their website, www. Tropicbirdsailing.com, that it’s your private charter. They tailor the itinerary and activities to your interests. You feel welcome, comfortable and pampered as they provide you with an abundance of food, drink and lively conversation aboard their fully equipped boat.
We enjoyed the loungers arranged for us on the foredeck and had an unobstructed view of the scenery and wildlife. Patrick pointed out flora and fauna so we could get pictures and ask questions. Throughout the day we spotted dolphins, we even had one who swam alongside the boat for several minutes, allowing ample time for photos and movies. Patrick informed us that the water temperature was too cool for manatees so they moved to inland waterways in search of warmer water.
We anchored near an island and sandbar where we were served a delicious lunch followed by a short trip via a dingy to shore. Once ashore Patrick led us on a nature walk pointing out all the different species of wading birds, followed by a quiet walk on the white sandy beach and some shelling.
We arrived back to the dock as the sun was setting. One more drink and a toast to our hosts and a spectacular day!

6 of us spent the day with Patrick; a charming and knowledgeable man; aboard his catamaran for a pre-birthday outing for 2 of our group. The day turned put to be much more interesting than we were expecting, with so much information imparted about the ten thousand islands, the wildlife and sealife. We learnt a lot from a very interesting man, who has many stories to tell.

Morning coffee and fresh scones welcomed us aboard followed by an introduction to the mangroves. We then got underway on a perfect sea, under a clear blue sky. At lunchtime we moored up to enjoy a wonderful lunch, provided by Patrick, with plenty of wine and beer!

In the afternoon we walked along a beautiful strip of island, collecting shells and learning many interesting things about the shelfish and other marine life. We then sailed in the Gulf of Mexico before making our way back through the islands to the marina at Goodland.

I certainly recommend a day aboard the Tropicbird for a fun day out.

An excursion with Captain Patrick Higgins is - to me - like a discovery tour I've made through literature suddenly turned real. The wonders of nature are there, abundant and very visible, such as the birds, the dolphins, the shells etc. And the mysterious things are there to be detected with the microscope on board.
The catamaran is very comfortable, the food and drinks are delicious.
Cpt. Patrick is a perfect, humorous, very British leader, teacher and host. He guided us into the Everglades but he also told us about his four-year-sailing-around-the-world with his wife and three children. For us Austrians something daring, unimaginable ! We may read about them but we hardly ever meet such "adventurous heroes". We were so amazed, so impressed and the 16-year-old in our group was quite overwhelmed.

captain patrick is a very hospitable guy, he made that day-trip with the boat for me and my family to a perfect excursion! the mix of entertainment and education (edutainment) was just perfect! I learned a lot at this very cozy boat in a wonderful and relaxed environment. His wife made perfect food, that we enjoyed on deck of his boat in the middle of the ocean.

We were looking for a real catamaran charter experience, not just some 3-hour tourist float up and down the coast looking at high rises. Patrick's boat is beautiful and very comfortable. Patrick is witty, well-educated and he is very pleasant to spend the day with. He takes you on an 8-hour educational tour of the 10,000 Islands, a beautiful and serence setting full of wildlife and beauty. I plan to be a repeat customer for as many years as he remains in business.
