We hiked the La Chua Trail and really enjoyed it. It is about 3 1/2 miles round trip and totally flat and easy to hike. There were lots alligators out, you are really close to some of them, but they seem uninterested in you. It was a beautiful, cool, sunny day and it brought lots of people out. The trail was very crowded and it would have been nicer with fewer people. We saw lots of birds too. Nice way to spend a few hours. There is a box for your payment, at the time we went, it was $3 pp.

Recently visited this specific trail in December and it was fantastic. The trail itself is kept up well by the groundskeepers. What was most impressive were the gators of course. It was a warm day, the water was higher and there were hundreds of gators sunning themselves on the banks. They were very large and a little discombobulating to see them so very close. Nonetheless, it was an amazing sight to see. If you are visiting central Florida, it's well worth a visit to see the Prairie and specifically this trail. At the end of the trail, you are rewarded with an observation deck and it's very pretty. I am told the sunsets can be amazing from the trail but have not Ben there myself at the right time. Enjoy y'all.

Stayed at Paynes Prairie State Park for two days while on an extended Christmas camping trip. It was a wonderful surprise. I had driven over/through the prairie on I-75 many, many times and just thought it was a dry lake bed. Boy, was I wrong. The park itself is beautiful. The Visitor's Center on the edge of the prairie gives you a great understanding of the long history of this place and the observation tower is a wonderful place to see the local residents (we saw wild pigs and wild horses....the wild bison are said to be extremely shy). Great biking and hiking. Beautiful and private campsites, including several full facility, tent-only sites...which is perfect for this avid tenter. Perhaps not the greatest place for camping with small children as there's no place to swim, but we'll be back!

My favorite place to go in Gainesville is hiking in Paynes Prairie. There are numerous trails to hike, bike trails and lots of wildlife to see; horses, bison, alligators and birds galore. Sometimes you'll even see a bunny, deer, armadillo or wild hogs.
