Its just a big open area. There are no animals to be seen and it is quite uneventful.

Beautiful and large statepark in the Gainesville area. Good for all ages. There are tons of wildlife, and you never know what you'll see. Ive came within 10 feet from 2 wild spanish horses there before and seen countless alligators/birds. Go, its free and gives you low/medium impact exercise.

We visited the LaChua trail area at the north end of Paynes Prarie Ste Preserve twice, once mid-day and then mid-morning the next day. In addition to countless numbers of Great Blue, Louisiana and Little Blue herons, snowy and cattle egrets, stilts, redwing blackbirds, boat-tailed grackles, ospreys, white and glossy ibises, moorhens and enormous alligators, we saw bald eagles, Sandhill cranes, wild turkeys, red shouldered hawks, bison, wild horses, feral hogs, pelicans and several dedicated and knowledgeable park staffers!

Wear a hat and bring plenty of water and sunscreen..there's no shade out on the prairie!

This 15,000 acre state preserve is a great place to hike and see wildlife. There are many trails in different sections of this massive park. The visitor center has a film about the park and some exhibits. There are also some beautiful lakes around the park and camping is available. A terrific place to see sand hill cranes, and if your are lucky see wild horses and bisons, which were reintroduced to the area.
