South Garden is one of the only options for dim sum in Gainesville, and it's certainly the only dim sum house we ever visited. It has a variety of options that you order off of a menu, including sticky rice, cheung fun, har gao, dumplings, etc. The prices are all quite affordable, around $3 each, and it ends up being a tasty and fun meal.

Because it's a small establishment, it's worth arriving early to ensure that you get a table. When we were living in Gainesville, they opened at 10:30 AM on weekends. I believe the restaurant used to close during parts of UF's holiday periods, but not sure if this is still the case. By the end of the day (3 PM for dim sum), they do sometimes run out of the most popular options.

Our favourite dish was the Singapore rice noodle dish, around $10. It was made-to-order and absolutely delicious.

They have great outdoor seating area with high chairs available for ones with tiny tots. The weekend Dim Sum menu was a true delight! All the items were priced around $4 so we thought the portions would be small; however we were surprised at their generous quantities (eg. 5 spring rolls for $3.75). All the dishes were steaming hot, served in a short time after placing the orders and just perfectly flavorful. We were informed that an elderly couple cooks all the dishes themselves :-) Highly recommend this authentic neighborhood restaurant!

Dim Sum is wonderful. Love the Singapore Chow Mein Fun. Family owned restaurant, great service, and food is excellent quality. Nice outside seating available for take-out. this is the real deal!!!

My wife wanted to go to this neighborhood Chinese restaurant for dinner. I suggested that we call ahead and order take out. She said she needed to get out.
When we arrived at the courtyard/mall we saw that the bar/restaurant next door was full of patrons drinking away. Our venue had tables and chairs outside-very pleasant atmosphere.
We waited for the waiter to show up any time. After a while I went in and asked him to bring us menus and waters. He responded that he did not come out as some people sit out there who are not potential patrons and get miffed when he asks if he can help them. Assured that we were there for dinner he served waters and the menu which is the same as the takeout menu.
Our soup of Hot and sour came out in two large bowls. Good tasting soup but there's no meat (pork) in it.
My Vegetable Lo Mein came out first and tasted just average. My wife's Szechuan special came out after a long wait .It tasted just average meaning that their dim sum--which we have had before on weekends --are much better than the menu items.
We noticed that there was a steady stream of take out customers being served. Proved my point that we should have ordered takeout. And the service would have been much faster..
