There must be something about people in Gainesville that makes them rate things on price, not value. Upper Crust, which has been around for a long time, is not a good French pastry shop. In fact, it is not very French. The staff were not familiar with the French names of various of their items for sale, and did not know much about French pastry in general. Some of the items are tasty (we have tried a wide range over the years), but all pastries and other sweets are grotesquely over-sized. And some are just bland and without character. Perhaps this is the result of Gainesville being a college town, full of starving students, but the sheer size of some of the sweets and savories is off-putting. Who needs a croissant the size of a dinner plate? They lose a star because of this, and another because of the pretentiousness of the entire approach. They have some good cheese, but a better selection can be found down the street at Dorn's liquor store, and an even better selection downtown at Wine and Cheese.
