Joey's Bird House B&B
Reviewed October 17, 2013

We were biking the Katy Trail in Missouri and had booked Joey Los' Birdhouse in McKittrick, MO because everything in Hermann (across the river) was booked because it was Octoberfest. Well, it turned out to be one of the highlights of our trip! It is a charming B&B right off the trail. But the best part was meeting Joey and Rich. We were "desperate" to see the Broncos game, so Rich drove us into Hermann and picked us up after the game. His commentary on Hermann as a native was priceless! Joey and Rich were so helpful. My brother had broken a cleat and Joey was able to round up a pair of pedals that he could use with his tennis shoes.

But the best part was Joey's breakfast in the morning - hot scrambled eggs, hash browns, homemade pear butter, dandelion kimchi and sauerkraut, French press coffee - oh my! The best food we had on the entire Katy Trail.

We cannot wait to get back here. We rode from Portland to McKittrick (15 miles). It was the most perfect one day trip. Joey and Rich are wonderful! I could rave about this place all day long. Joey will serve you a wonderful meal if planned. Goodies are provided including a french press for your morning coffee.

We had a great visit and stay at Joey's Bird House in McKittrick - we've stayed in Hermann previously but opted to stay closer to the Katy Trail this trip as a lot of the places in Hermann were full due to the Wine Tour event. We lucked out that Joey had an opening - what a treat it was to stay at the Bird House and eat some fantastic meals at the Mercantile.

The Bird House, had a great old clawfoot tub with a shower, a small kitchen and a large bedroom/sitting area. We stayed two nights while biking the Katy Trail and joining the wine tour in Hermann. Staying in McKittrick allowed us to be close enough to Hermann and the 9 + wineries in the area, and within in a few 100 feet of the Katy Trail, but far enough away from the "boisterous" throngs of people that flock to Hermann for the wine and brew festivities. It was quiet and relaxing! Sitting outside listening to the frogs and seeing the stars - far better than any hotel or B&B located in a busy town.

Very clean and well kept - if you are looking for the luxuries of a 5 star hotel then this is not your place but if you're looking for a clean & quite place to stay and a great meal away from the hustle and bustle you'll love this place.

A great value and just great place to stay highly recommend and agree with other positive posts listed.

This is the best deal on the KATY Trail. Joey made me a special "Veggie" sandwich and a bowl of the best soup I ever ate. I had just finished a ride from Jefferson City and was caught in the most violent thunderstorm I had ever experienced. Accommodations were more than adequate and the bed was terrific. I slept very well. I got to see and talk to several "locals" at the "milk rendezvous". This place is needed on the KATY, and I hope It is successful. It is definitetly a bargain. In the middle of the night I stepped outside. The stars were brilliant. A great B&B.

We stayed here on a coast to coast bike ride.  Joey's is RIGHT OFF the Trail, I took a photo of McKittrick station from the kitchen window. No two mile extra ride into Hermann :)

Of our six nights in Katy lodgings, Joey's was by far the best value. Really cute, an old post office converted into a *duplex.* Everything you could possibly need is provided, includimg easily $20 in food and cold beers in the fridge. Ours had a full kitchen and we were welcome to pick whatever we wanted from the garden. I loved the setup where homemade breads, eggs, butter, milk, OJ, bagels, fruit, and all sorts of snacks were there and you didn't have to attend a B & B breakfast. We managed to eat or pack up everything but a big bag of pretzels!

Additionally, next door is "The Mercantile," where Joey runs a restaurant on weekends. Too bad we ate dinner before arriving because Rich offered us leftovers. Upstairs in The Mercantile is a 2,000 sq ft ballroom big enough for groups with sleeping bags to rent. They were just leveling ground for a tenting group coming in,that weekend, so add camping to the accommodations.

Joey's was our favorite stay on the Katy for half the price of most Katy lodging!
