The best part of our June 14 lunch at Anglers was our red haired server/bartender! She epitomizes excellent service, great customer relations, and how to make customers feel very welcome. As soon as we were seated at our tall wooden table, she came over with a huge smile, menus in hand, and a mischievous twinkle in her eyes. My wife and I, on a week's vacation along the Gulf shore, instantly felt like this was a place we wanted to be, despite the recent mixed reviews we'd read on tripadvisor.
Both of us love seafood, so I ordered the Fried Oyster Po-Boy and my wife the Soft Shell Crab Basket. While waiting, Red recommended and brought us, with a flourish, a couple of tall, specialty drinks that she concocted behind the bar. They were fantastic! And refreshing, as the A/C at Anglers wasn't working up to par and the restaurant not very cool.
Our meals soon arrived, and we eagerly chowed down. My Po-Boy (the first I'd ever had, being Canadian) was perfectly done and delectable! Not so much my wife's crab dish. She expected crab meat but said there were only two small bits inside the "squishy" shell, but instead a lot of little "wriggly" feet that turned her off. As a result, we felt the mixed reviews were justified.
After our meal, we bid Red a fond farewell and headed out onto the long pier extending from the back of the restaurant far into the breakers. This gave us a good view up and down the beach, which at sunset would have been spectacular (as several reviewers had pointed out). We headed back to our nearby condo thinking we'd try seafood at other restaurants on Okaloosa Island.
