Waterscape Condominiums
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed June 12, 2014

I have a 16 month old and we just stayed at Waterscape this past week! We stayed in unit B606.
Pros: the pool area was wonderful! There are two pools, lazy river, and a very shallow kiddie pool and a kiddie area attached to one of the larger pools. There is also an area with small things to climb on for little kids near the kiddie pool area. The beach was very clean and well maintained. The whole condo itself was really nice! Our unit was nice and clean and had a view of the ocean from the balcony. The higher up and the smaller room numbers have better views (ex: 606 is better than 620). The condo was also within walking distance to Anglers, Crab Trap, Waffle House, Old Bay Steamer, and The Black Pearl (restaurants). You are also close to the pier, a surf shop, and not far from a Publix. The condo provided free dvd rentals, free wifi, and there were plenty of towels in the rooms, and cooking utensils (pots/pans etc...).
Cons: These "cons" wouldn't have kept me from staying here or returning again! The beach area is not a very large section (about as wide as the condo). They line the beach chairs and umbrellas up in rows (usually there are 3). You will always get a chair (two chairs and umbrella come with the room- additional chairs provided by the condo cost extra) but you may be in the third row staring at two other rows of chairs! Also if you plan on brining one of the big tents you have to sit it up behind the third row of chairs and they CAN NOT be left up overnight bc the condo will tear them down and throw away. There are people that "police" the beach area that will come around and as your room numbers if you are using the condo provided chairs (so no cheating and using more than 2). You also can not sit up your tents off the condos beach portion because to the left and right belong to other condos. Another thing to note- the kiddie pool uses "re filtered" water and has signs warning NOT to drink the water (this kind of grossed me out). If you want pool chairs you must get up before 8 and go "reserve" them with something because there will most likely be none available the rest of the day! There is a sign saying do not reserve pool chairs but everyone did and no one "policed" this! The condo had a parking structure and the driving lane was narrow meaning you have to stop going up and down to let others pass. Some things to note: extra paper towels, toilet paper, and trash bags are not provided. You get an initial set up but none past that. They provided one load of dishwasher stuff and laundry soap- so bring your own!

Overall we really enjoyed our stay here and will definitely be back!

For years we've stayed at Destin West up the street when we've come to the Destin area. I've always thought Waterscape was an interesting property and we've walked it 2x in years past just checking it out. But, for us the lazy river at Destin West held supreme.

Last year, we stayed in Orange Beach at the Phoenix West and that was super awesome and it's going to be tough being objective after that place! (To be fair it was $4,000 a week for that condo 3bed/4 bath vs. $1,800 for this one 2 bed/2 bath - and it was super nice)

Ok, onto Waterscape.

We stayed in A316. It was decently appointed and was a good size for the 5 of us. This included my wife and I, two teenage girls, and our 5 year old son. All the appliances worked and there were plenty of silverware and dishes. We had a good view of the courtyard.

The beach is a short walk and we got 2 chairs as part of our rental. Not bad.

PROS
1) Very quiet rooms. This condo has some of the best soundproofing we've ever experienced. Never heard anyone above or in the halls. Due to the staggered design, you don't really have next door neighbors.

2) A lot of variety of things to do. You've got the little kids area, an oval pool, the zero entry pool with obstacle course, 2 hot tubs, a lazy river and the beach. All that helps keep things from getting boring while on the property.

3) Covered parking - it was cloudy and rainy the first couple days. Nice not to have to deal with outdoor parking.

4) Friendly staff

5) On site Fuddpuckers snack stand - expensive (but all food is in the area) but very convenient if you're down by the pool and need a drink or snack and you're not interested in going back to your room for it.

CONS
1) The internet is like being back in the 90s on Dial Up. I know you're at the beach to relax and maybe get away, but we also like to stay connected and such when taking breaks and relaxing at night. Trying to do anything online was a super pain.

2) We use Verizon as our cell service provider and literally had 1-2 bars of cell signal and often times 3G or no data service in the room! Crazy! Couldn't use our phones as hotspots to make up for item 1 above.

ADVICE
1) Our room A316, was right by the elevator and that made it super convenient to get to the pools and beach. Fantastic access point. Anywhere in the middle of the A complex is a good place to stay.

2) If you have small kids then the second floor may be for you, as the kids area is actually on the second floor of the complex. So that way, you have no elevator ride to get to those pools. Once again, the A wing has the best access based on what I saw.

3) Bring flip flops - the walkways get super hot!

4) They don't like you to go down early and reserve seats at the pools. I saw the security people packing up peoples stuff and taking it away. Be careful if you think you're going to reserve a seat early. It may be gone when you go down!

5) This time of year, you're going to have a hard time seeing a nice sunrise or sunset from the property. This is primarily based on the property design and layout.

6) Unless you pay big bucks for the end of condo rooms, you're not going to have much beach view. No matter what room you're in.

7) The location may be a bit of a put off as it's a good little drive in Destin for dinner. Best to go before 5 PM for dinner to avoid all the traffic.

We have been coming to the Destin area for 10 years. Usually we stay in Destin, but this resort looked incredible so we decided to try it out. The resort itself is incredible. A heated pool, a zero entry pool, a lazy river, and a kids splash pool area with slide. We stayed in a 2br condo and it was nice. Most units do not have the tradition - look straight at the ocean views. They are all at an angle or from a distance unless you are on the very ends of buildings A or B. Building C is the farthest from the beach, so you won't have a very good or close view of the ocean. You do have to walk a ways from the parking garage to get to your room. If you never leave your resort & fix all your meals, stay here. If you like to get out, it's about a 10-20 minute drive into Destin as there isn't a lot of dining or things to do on okaloosa island. Another thing is there is a gentlemans club right across the street :( overall the resort is great other than no restaurant or shop other than the pool bar snack shop. I think it's a little pricey, but you are paying for all the pool areas. If it was located in the heart of Destin, I would give it 5stars, but location matters to us.

Room Tip: Stay in buildings A or B on the 3-6th floors and get a "lowest room number" to be closest...

We stayed at this hotel a few summers ago and it was fantastic! We were lucky enough to have a room on one of the ends of the hotel so we had amazing ocean views and a great wrap around porch. The room was very nice and spacious. The pool area in the middle was great and a great place for the kids to play! We had easy access to the beach. There are some great restaurants that are all within 5 minutes of the hotel. Great family vacation spot!

We just got back from our 3rd stay at this resort. Our four children (2, 6, 15 and 16) all love it here. It bridges the age gaps for our children - there is something for everybody. This resort is beach front, but not all rooms are beach front, so do your home work on the layout of the resort. All three times we stayed here, we rented through VRBO.com. Be advised that the pictures on these listings are not always representative of the views from your room.....again...do you homework and ask questions. The owners are very willing to help. The property has 3 bldgs - A, B and C. A will have morning shade and evening sun. B will have morning sun and evening shade. C will have shade most all day, but it is the furthest from the beach and will not have great view of the ocean. Here are our favorite things....The awesome poolside grills, the fitness room, easy access to beach, 3 grocery stores nearby, sooo kid friendly. We love it!

This is the second year that my family has stayed here. WE LOVE IT. The 2 bed room with bunks slept 8 very comfortably. The resort offers a variety of pools for kids of all ages and it never seems to get too crowded. The beach access is easy and not a long walk out. The chair boys were very courteous and prompt. My daughter loved the lazy river and my son loved the kiddy slide. Also two nice size hotubs. and a workout room that overlooks the pools.

Room Tip: The rooms on the ground floor offer great access and a little bit of yard for the kids to play in, a...

ok, I have stayed here several times and was very curious this time as to the New Holiday Inn that is being built right next to the Waterscape on the east side. This link appears to show quite a distance between the two buildings so hopefully no blocked views:

Maybe the work that is left is mostly on the inside to not hear noise too. I will report more when I get back at the end of June.

We always stay in 207A and I love working with the owners. This has been our yearly trip since it was built and before that we were next door at Summer Place.
