Owner description: MOEC is an ideal place to learn more about the Treasure Coast's unique environment and its inhabitants, including the threatened Florida manatee. Inside you'll find an educational film (with closed-captioning), various aquariums, a touch-tank and interactive displays - all of which are enhanced by wonderful volunteers. Eco-boat tours are available along with a wildlife observation tower which provides visitors a bird's-eye-view of the Indian River Lagoon. MOEC is situated at the mouth of Moore's Creek which is a popular spot to see visiting manatees during colder months. There are 400-500 manatees living in our area year-round but, considering their backyard is 156 miles long and connected to a multitude of creeks and canals, it is never guaranteed that they will be visiting the Center at any given time. Please feel free to call ahead in advance to ask whether manatees are present. MOEC is supported by donations, memberships and the proceeds from its gift shop The Vanishing Mermaid.

If you don't know much about manatees and their migration habits, food source, love of fresh water, etc, then an hour at the Mantatee Observation and education Center is worth a stop. Exhibits are eyeball high to kids and many hands on experiences await them. At the right time of year you will see manatees. Having been to Blue Springs in Deland where the manatees gather in the winter in crystal clear water, this was an OK visit. On the other hand, for those from away (up north) it is a good primer for learning about the species. Great staff and nice gift store. An hour should do it.

This is a great place to see and learn about manatees. The gift shop also has some wonderful items. In the same parking area as the Backus Gallery and visitor's center.

A few years ago, we visited the Manatee Center. We were impressed by the informative staff. The site was clean and well maintained. This year, when we visited the center we were quite disappointed. The staff was not as well informed and the area in and around the building appeared neglected. The city of Fort Pierce should devote more time and energy in improving the Center.

We visited the museum--paid a two dollar donation to go inside. We watched a short informative video about manatees. Got some informative brochures. We walked around the outside and did see manatee in the marina area. The gift shop had alot of things--actually got stickers for our grandchildren that were half off and I got a pair of sunglasses for my self that were very reasonable.

While in Fort Pierce eating at The Original Tiki be sure to walk over to the Manatee Education Center. You can see manatees up close and even touch them as they swim by in the channel into the bay.
