Owner description: MOEC is an ideal place to learn more about the Treasure Coast's unique environment and its inhabitants, including the endangered Florida manatee. Inside, an educational film, various aquariums, a touch-tank and interactive displays are enhanced by wonderful volunteers. Eco boat tours are available along with a wildlife observation tower which provides visitors a bird's-eye-view of Indian River Lagoon. MOEC is situated at the mouth of Moore's Creek which is a popular spot to see visiting manatees during colder months. There are 400-500 manatees living in our area year-round but, considering their backyard is 156 miles long and connected to a multitude of creeks and canals, it is never guaranteed that they will be visiting the center at any given time. MOEC is supported by donations, memberships and the proceeds from its gift shop The Vanishing Mermaid.

“Out of Season”
Reviewed September 25, 2013

We stopped in here, knowing the manatees were out of season. The facility is smallish, with some habitat displays and some models of manatees. The center had good information on how to spot and avoid manatees. A staff member in the gift shop advised us to go to Round Island to see manatees and mentioned that they take school children there. We took her advice and were lucky enough to see a few close up. We were grateful for the tip.

“Small but Interesting”
Reviewed August 6, 2013

We were a bit disappointed to find that it wasn't likely that we would actually see manatees. Apparently you may spot one in the winter, but not real likely in the summer. The center is a very small building, but there are some interesting creatures to see. There is also a touch tank with some small urchins, starfish, horseshoe crabs, etc. The volunteer was very friendly and got all of them out for our two year old to see.

There are some puzzles and other little activities for younger children if they are interested.

For only $1 to enter, I would say that it was definitely worth the money. I'm glad we took the time to stop by.

“Small But Nice”
Reviewed July 31, 2013

We took our grand kids to the Observation and Education center and they liked it very much even though they saw no manatees. The center is small but nice. The kids liked it and enjoyed seeing the displays. I wouldn't suggest it for kids under 5. The length of time it will take you to visit really depends on how involved the kids will want to get.

“Delightful manatees”
Reviewed July 29, 2013

Great experience for kids of all ages. Very educational with close up views of manatees. Located on the river, very close ( walking distance) to other sites such as Bachus Art Museum, restaurants, and marina. Volunteers are very friendly and informative. Cute little gift shop. Go! Enjoy!

“We did see 2 manatees”
Reviewed July 12, 2013

The museum is very small and feels a little crowded and amateur, but the kids had a great time explorig around. The best part was climbing the observation tower and looking out onto the water with all the fish swimming around. We wer lucky to see 2 manatees and one small turtle.
