We stayed at the Pink Shell Resort for 5 nights in late May, just during/after Memorial Day weekend. We had two small children and some extended family with us, and so we stayed in the two bedroom villa in White Sands. The room was outstanding. Extremely clean, and all the amenities one could want to include sink, dishes, dishwasher, microwave, refrigerator, etc. There is a small living room, dining area, kitchen, and a screened balcony with a view of the ocean. This is in addition to the large window in the living room that overlooks the pool and beach. The bedroom space, along with a sofa bed in the living room was enough to house 5 adults and two children.
The resort itself is a great place for families. The pool is awesome as the temperature is warm, there is a waterfall and a separate splash pool. The kids thoroughly enjoyed both. Bongos is the main restaurant/bar for the hotel, and it sits right next to the pool. It has really good food for both daytime snacking and dinner, and mixed/frozen drinks go for about 7 dollars each. The resort is steps from the beach, which was relatively quiet and spacious. There are ample chairs and umbrellas, and the employees are more than willing to drill a hole in the sand and put in an extra umbrella for you.
Jack's is the other restaurant on the resort, located in the Captiva building. They serve only breakfast. It is a buffet that costs 15.99 per adult, kids are free, and they do give you several coupons for a free breakfast when you check in. We thought the breakfast was awesome. The food was really good, (exceptionally good fresh fruit) and it changes every day. They have an omelette/waffle station, fresh fruit, cereal, pastries/muffins, and a rotation of hot breakfast items. We didn't see the need to go anywhere else.
The resort itself is about 3/4 of a mile from "Times Square" which is the main area on the beach with shops, restaurants, etc. The Times Square area has other good eating options, ice cream, etc. There is a gift shop on the resort that has many basic needs but is very overpriced, and a 7-11 between the resort and Times Square, so very walkable. If you don't have a vehicle with you, there is a trolley service that stops in front of the resort and makes several stops on Fort Myers beach. We tried using it once and found it to be unreliable. There is a local cab service that came almost immediately and could take you to destinations that are well beyond Times Square. My wife and I ate at Fresh Catch Bistro, and that too was great.
The Aquagene Spa is also in the resort, and was really nice. They indicate needing reservations a few days before your desired day.
I'm probably being stingy by not giving this the full 5 stars, but I did so for a few reasons. One is so as not to mislead people. My perception is that this is a truly outstanding family resort/vacation destination. If one were looking for a luxurious trip for couples, or a great singles vacation, this may not be the best spot. It's really, really nice but I wouldn't call it a 5-star luxury resort. In addition, there were a couple of extremely minor issues. One is that the TV channel selection in the rooms was a bit odd and limited. Not that we were spending a ton of time in the rooms, but the kids were put to bed early and we looked to relax either on the balcony or couch. Certain common stations that you'd expect/hope to have were not available. This was not a huge deal. The other issue was that the demeanor/attitude of some of the wait staff was hit or miss. Overall the service is good, but some of the staff came across as apathetic or slow. In the event that some of the management reads this, the staff members that were notably GOOD include Nick, Gerry, Debbie, Sasha and Marjorie (who was exceptionally good).
Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our trip, and the resort is beautiful. I can't speak for the other buildings, but White Sands was the main building and therefore had easy access to almost everything. Despite being in the main building, we found our room and surrounding area to be very quiet. The other buildings aren't far away though, as a very short walk puts you at the pool, Bongos, etc.
I would highly recommend this to any family looking for an great beach vacation, as you can pretty much stay in one place and enjoy yourself for several days.
