“Fort Myers Beach. I belong here.”
Reviewed November 11, 2012

In all my travels, nothing compares with the laid back feeling I get when I visit this island. The people I meet were all from somewhere else, and I think it is this diversity that makes this district so special. From formal dining settings in nearby Naples, to the down to earth conch style atmosphere on The Beach, there is something here for everybody.

The beaches are well maintained, clean white and wide, with plenty of nature to observe. But what stands out in Fort Myers beach are the friendly, helpful people.

There are two districts on the island: the northern district which is somewhat congested, where parking is limited and costly, but the hotels, bars, restaurants and clubs are more for the budget minded, and I spent a lot of time up here getting to know the area.

Then there is the south island 'gold coast', with premium priced hotels and condos, and the widest uncrowded beaches anywhere. The hotspot on the south beach is Pincher's Tiki Bar adjoining the Holiday Inn. Nearby are glorious high rise residences overlooking the Gulf of Mexico, or on the other side of the boulevard, exclusive apartments with private grounds.

Near at hand are several tourist destinations which make Fort Myers Beach the heart of it all. In less than an hour you can be at a 6400 acre federal wildlife preserve on Sanibel Island, on some of the most desireable land in America, totally devoid of commercial development. WOW ! Or visit the world reknowned Edison Ford Museum and Estates on McGregor Road in the city, not far at all.

Everglade City, home of the Everglade National Park 10000 Islands area, is only a little over an hour away by freeway. Nearby, experience true 'conch style' seafood restaurants. They have abundant delicacies that are not normally found elsewhere at reasonable prices.

I don't expect to ever find a vacation destination better than Fort Myers Beach, and I might be able to live here in paradise some day.

“Beautiful beach, but very crowded”
Reviewed November 11, 2012

We were disappointed that there was no free parking anywhere and that the beach was so incredibly crowded.

“Great for walking”
Reviewed November 10, 2012

It's nice and flat for walking. I prefer to walk North on the beach as opposed to south though. It gets smelly around the trees on the south end.

Loved Pink Shell Resort. Relaxed at spa, pool, beach and rented wave runner and just had an awesome weekend.

Not having been to F-M in quite a while, the weather reports were too enticing to pass it up. Plenty of blue sky, bright sun, and daily temps in the mid 90's, for April. Deals to fit the budget popped up after Easter/Spring Break madness. Even got a rental car for $79/wk. Didn't stay on the beach, but my motel was only a 15 minute drive. I would not enjoy a crowded season with a 1 hour drive, most of that waiting in traffic, as you cross the bridge onto the 2 lane beach road. Public parking lots were metered, and at $2/hr, that seemed a concern if spending 8-10 hrs at the beach. Some smaller side roads had direct beach access, with 3-4 metered spots. If arriving late to watch the sunsets, you don't have to feed the meters after 6pm. But I found one of the many vacant lots offering beachside parking. $5 for all day, and this one even gave me a beach chair to use. The beaches are clean, and people seem to remove their trash to the many available receptacles. The city even provides free "poopie bag" dispensers for people who care to walk their dog. I finally understood the signs warning of doing the "Ft. Myers Shuffle" when walking in the water. It's to avoid stepping on a Stingray. I did spot 4 of them cruising the shallow water at low tide. Walk forever, and have fun filling your bag of shells, maybe even a fossilized shark tooth. I take a small lunch for the day, so can't comment on any of the eating opportunities. A beach vacation is for spending time on the beach, and Ft. Myers Beach Island has plenty of opportunity for that. Arrive back home with your envious golden tan. PS: I was also impressed with Ft. Myers airport (RSW), about 15 miles from the beach.
