The Lighthouse Resort Inn and Suites
Ranked #19 of 47 Hotels in Fort Myers Beach
Reviewed December 16, 2006

The Lighthouse Resort Inn & Suites, 1051 5th Street, Fort Myers Beach.
A total rip-off even using a Travel Guide coupon.

We first stayed at The Lighthouse in 1995, and have always had value for money, until this visit.
The apartment we had in 1995 is now half the size.
Wi-Fi Hot Spot.
We were assured at check in, by Tom, that WiFi access was available in the public areas as advertised. That is, by the office, the pool, and the all invasive Tikki Bar.
We believed him. What a sucker I was?
Moreover we paid for 7 nights, in advance, without checking with my Hot Spot Finder.
2 others seeing me with a laptop by the pool, laughed, and said that they too had been unable to get access, but were only staying one night.
We reported this lack of wifi to the Front desk every day. They repeatedly stated that there was no problem, and absolutely nothing was done for 5 days.
Furthermore they said it had nothing to do with them, the wifi is supplied by an outside contractor.
After 6 days there was a service so we booked for another 6 nights.
Unfortunately this only lasted for 3 days then once again there was no service whatsoever.
Problem is that the front desk and the Tikki bar staff are totally wi-fi illiterate. They do not understand the problem and moreover appear not care.
On paying the final bill, our request for some consideration for the lack of wifi was totally rejected.

Net Stumbler registers “No AP’s (Access Points) available”.
This complaint should be put in context with the fact that we flew with BA, and the radiation scare.
BA’s sole contact with passengers was by e-mail. Thank goodness for Lee County Library.

5 out of the 8 motels in Fort Myers Beach tested positive for wifi. Try them before checking in to The Lighthouse.

Further problems.
Gas barbeque grills are advertised. They do not exist any longer. They do have charcoal grills and they charge for charcoal.
The oven in the room was unusable. Knob missing and was filthy dirty, and rusty.
The refrigerator is very rusty outside.
Cutlery was dirty, can opener rusty and unusable.
On arrival the TV remote didn’t work and was replaced next day.
Knob loose on kitchen cabinet, I fixed it.
Don’t use the toilet before a shower! Don’t use any cold water at the sinks whilst someone is in the shower. They will get scalded.
The bedside cabinet was unusable as the drawers do not open.
Dining table has a folding leaf, but impossible to raise it as the slides are jammed.
There is no lighting over the table, I asked reception if it was possible to have a small table lamp, they rejected my request.
One slatted blind doesn’t work as the angle controller is missing.
Glass entrance door into Room 140 has a see thru curtain. There is a total lack of privacy after dark. Nice for the locals in the Tikki Bar. No wonder it is so popular.
Parking is impossible for clients at weekends due to visitors to the Tikki Bar. On three occasions we had to park in front of the property outside reception.
Local families, and their rowdy kids, flood the pool at weekends. We never saw anyone being asked to show their room key before entering the pool area.
Rubbish bin collection is at 5.30am. Good job we like an early morning walk on the beach.
The many cats create noise at night and leave faeces on the balcony. They don’t like cold water!

Good Points
The fridge and microwave worked. The bed is comfortable. Housekeeping is very good.

The wi-fi reception at Lee County Library on Bass Road is fantastic. 5 bar reception in the car park. But do go inside, there are ample desks with laptop power points and a totally open, self installing, wi-fi system, all free.

For an unusual dining experience try Maria’s, on San Carlos Boulevard, all you can eat fish for $11.95. Bring your own wine, just pay $1 for each glass. Corkscrew supplied free. Very relaxed, casual, basic.
Food without any frills. Not the Ritz but absolutely wonderful fish. Any fresher and it’s still swimming.

My wife of 22 years and I could not of been happier. We spent a few days celibrating our aniversery and would have loved to been able to stay much longer. I can't think of anything negative to say. The location could not be better. The property atmosphere is so much better than the ordinary hotel on the beach. If you can not have a good time here, perhaps many sessions of therapy are in order.
The Tiki bar was wonderful with a lengthy daily happy hour and really good food. We loved it hereand are looking forward to our next opportunity to return. A perfect spot for our next family reunion.

I appear to have had a completely opposite stay as many of the reviewers of this hotel. But then again, it could have been because I was in a group of 20-somethings there on college spring break. The pools were awesome, the staff was great, the room (Delux Suite) was amazing and clean, the atmosphere and location were ideal - all for a great price. We'd stay there again in a heartbeat. Their website provides virtual tours of the rooms and grounds, and they are very accurate.

Would definately stay again.

My husband and I were on a Florida road trip heading home on the west coast. Ft Myers Beach was the next logical choice to stop and from the coupon book for Florida, this hotel seemed to meet our needs. Yes, they had a room; we took it. Our mistake; I guess people who opt to take advantage of an offered discount get what they deserve - the dregs! It was wall to wall furniture with little space to put feet, much less luggage. The sole dresser was topped with a refrigerator and TV. No closet; hanging clothes had to be hung on the shower curtain, then moved to the bed to shower. No place to put toiletries. except the only flat surface, the toilet seat. It was dirty and there were cigarette burns in the bedspread. The pillow felt like cardboard. The only window was in the door and that was covered by mini-blinds - not good for darkening a room that overlooks the lit pool.

From the previous reviews, it's apparent that there are various levels of quality in this hotel. I would not dismiss those people who complain as just expecting more for their money. My complaints are legitimate and no satisfaction was offered by the hotel regardless of the 100% satisfaction guarantee. My advise is to seek your lodging elsewhwere

Stayed 4 terrible nights. Rooms are okay, BUT there is VERY loud live music playing from the pool-side bar until midnight every night. Since most rooms are near the bar, they are all effected. Also, bought 3 days of wireless internet access and it only worked during the first log-on. Front desk did not have a clue how to fix the problem and gave me a phone number to call. When number was called, all I got was a voicemail. I wasted my money.

We spent a night at the lighthouse inn on sunday July 30. With a coupon guide we got a suite for $ 79. When we entered the room the first sight was the unmade beds so we returned to the desk. When i told the guy that the room wasn't made, he asked me how bad it was(?!). When i said that the beds were slepped in he told us that he had one other room available. The room with a kitchenette. we decided to stay because it was getting late and went up to the room. It was located above the registration office.
the carpet doesn't look very clean and neither does the bathroom. I can't image preparing something to eat in the kitchenette. The lights next to the beds didn't work. the only light working was the one in the bathroom and the kitchenette. There was no warm water coming from the shower. I had to wash my hair in the sink.
There are no curtains in the room. Only blinds that you can easily peak through. At night there is live music until 2 o'clock in the tiki bar. That didn't bother us though.
After reading the reviews here it is clear that you should not stay in the standard rooms or kitchenettes in the front. If you have the larger suites in the back you will get a totally different experience than we did.

Stayed for 3 nights and no problems what so ever! My room overlooked the second of two pools which had a nice waterfall.(Jr Suite) Staff was friendly and accomodating. No, it is not on the water but then neither are the prices. The room was very nice and all was clean and in good working order. I would stay there again. Those who complain about this place are the ones who do not adequately research ahead of time. If you are looking for a fairly economical place thats clean and close to the action then this is your place. Also if you want quiet just request the building away from their Tiki Bar. I did not think it was a loud bar at all, and they really do have the best prices on FMB. IF however you are looking for the Ritz and a 5 star chef then "hey, why are you going to FMB??" You may want to change your plans and go to NYC. Bottom line, a nice place to stay and have fun no matter what you like to do.
