Captain Bob drives you in a van or bus out to Lake Trafford for airboat ride follwed by an "encounter" with baby alligators (cute--even my three year old was excited to hold one) and a sort of a mini-zoo he has created at the marina there, includes a huge Burmese Python, alligator snapping turtle, and a big collection of snakes. Past reviewer complained that the lake is not in the Everglades. On the contrary, the Everglades goes a lot further north than "Everglades Nat'l Park" and technically the entire southern end of FLA from Lake Okeechobee down are Everglades. It was hot the day we went and we only saw about 5 alligators, but that was fine. Evidently in cooler weather there are more seen. Lake is full of alligators according to boat driver (not crocodiles! as past reviewer said) . Saw tons of neat birds and the boat driver slowed down and identified them all for us. Also saw a bald eagle. Boat ride was abouy 40 minutes.
It's pretty tourist geared-- what do you expect for $60 each? It is marketed in the brochures and website accurately. Consider the company's expense in gas, vehicle upkeep and INSURANCE. Captain Bob is professional and the big van was clean and comfortable-- till the smelly German tourists were picked up anyway. The marina is pretty low rent but the folks there are nice-- they have a big collection of parrots that made conversation with us. My husband and mother-in-law agreed that the best part of the trip was actually Bob's explanation of Everglades history and hydrology on the trip down, which was interesting to both the scientists and nonscientists among us. My two kids thought the alligators were cool and van ride boring, so to each his own.
