A very nice waitress and owner could not compensate for the very mixed results of our lunch. The salads were great as was the Greek Chicken Breast and the french fries with cheese.

At the same time, I have never been served a side of vegetables that mostly consisted of flavorless broccoli stalks. The chicken on the souvlaki platter had no seasoning and tasted as though it had been boiled for hours. Beware the rice pudding as it was inedible. I have rarely seen such a mix of good and bad food served from the same kitchen at the same time.

TIP: Pick your dishes carefully!

Rating Athenian Restaurant as very good comes with strong caveats and some absolute reservations. For me, it's a favorite of its kind, in its category: solid decent uncomplicated food, which generally rises to above average in specific categories or fashion only. It's like eating in an aunt's house, not the one whose invitation was exciting, but the one whose offerings were filling.

The Greek samplings are, like all else, generous. It's not, for example, the best moussaka you'll ever find, but for a first or infrequent such taste, it's decent. Also, a main is accompanied by many other generous, though some mostly in calories, distractions. I don't like the soft mushy bread, but some of the other all inclusive satellite tack ons are very modestly satisfying enough on a lazy night: edible otherwise nondescript salad except for generous feta cheese and if you don't mind them, canned olives, two soup options (the right ones are less soggy), simple desserts hard to ruin like good pistachio or other ice cream and creamy rice pudding, etc. There are a few classier desserts but they are of the a la carte variety. I find it hard to think a la carte in any diner.

They owner, a nice enough Greek lady who should smile a bit more often, claims to have a good steak, which I've never tried, but my favorite dish hands down is their wonderful lamb shanks option, so tasty falling off the bone in a great all day vegetable tomato sauce and of generous proportion, the strongest reason for a slightly above average nod. (Note: there is no TA "good" category available, only "average" and "very good"). For very little extra, I order shanks and usually but not always have the discipline to take one home. It's not available every night so call ahead. There is an extensive a la carte daily menu with some interesting occasional offerings.

This place is a doggy bag mecca and early bird retiree paradise. Don't go expecting to find the hottest rap groups on tour. It seems people enjoy it for breakfast and lunch as well. It works for me at Athenian IF I go infrequently as in roughly seasonally or twice over the winter at most. I sense some are there weekly or even every other night. No way!

I had heard about this restaurant from many friends and tried it on a Sunday. I really enjoyed the food and, the other reviews aren't lying, the portions are enough for a couple of days. Just be careful when ordering the 'meals' which include large salads and dessert. This is a great Greek diner that is frequented by the surrounding community. The breakfasts are probably just what you remember from stopping at a Greek diner in your hometown at, say, about 2 in the morning and you were a little hungry. Comfort food at its best.

We have had good Greek food and this was not it. You get a lot of food with no taste. A lot of Greek favorites are not even made there Service fair. First and last time for us.

I've only had breakfast here, but I can't imagine any other meal being unequal to their breakfasts. Huge portions (if you are not a person with a huge appetite, I strongly recommend sharing a breakfast and paying the nominal plate charge).

They have some great omelets combining great tastes (this morning I had asparagus, tomato and swiss cheese) but will whip out perfectly made over medium or over easy eggs,

If you like feta, the owners are Greek so there are plenty of feta options, just know they use a lot.

You won't be disappointed, and your pocket book will not feel robbed as the prices are very fair.

Enjoy!
