My favorite time to visit the Estates is a holiday time. The homes are
beautifully decorated and the lights are wonderful.

“a learning experience”
Reviewed December 7, 2012

The grounds are beautiful and worth a visit just to enjoy a walk through the gardens. And with a docent you will learn about the plantings and their history.
Likewise as you tour the Edison laboratory and home you will be impressed with his ability and creativeness in engineering. He generally slept no more than 4 hours.
Viewing the house is like being in a time bubble. You can see how people (the wealthy ones anyway) lived and how their food was prepared, etc.
Worth at least half a day to listen to both the Ford and Edison histories, their relationship with each other and with other entrepreneurs of the time.

“One of the best self-guided tours”
Reviewed November 30, 2012

We toured the estates on the "Complete tour" package, which includes the prerecorded, self-paced audio tour. The audio was very well done, easy to understand and hear. The locations for playing segments were well marked.

We enjoyed walking the beautiful grounds on the banks of the river, looking into the labs, and strolling around the winter homes of these giants of industry and invention. The video biography of Edison is well worth sitting through.

I think almost everyone could find something enjoyable to view here.

“Visiting the Homes of Geniuses”
Reviewed November 28, 2012

This was our second visit, as we wanted to show some out-of-town friends this attraction. The admission price was much higher than the first visit, but there are flexible tiers available, depending on how you want to conduct the tour. As always, the grounds were beautiful and well-maintained. I was disappointed, though, that one could not actually walk into either the Edison or the Ford homes. All rooms are now fenced off with plastic screening. When we first visited some years ago, one could walk through some portions of the Ford home. I can imagine that the decision to completely close off general access to the public was undertaken reluctantly and as a matter of necessity, but, really, people don't want to simply stand outside of a room and lean over the fencing to take photos. The Ford garage also only held two vehicles, whereas in the past, I believe there might have been four. The tour guides and service people were all very well-trained and helpful. The Museum and Edison's Lab were great, the museum being much more professionally organized and presented compared to our first visit. Again, though, one cannot really walk through the Lab, since access is blocked by see-through fencing. I think I'm kvetching about something that, realistically, cannot be helped, though, since the prospect of hundreds of people per day walking through an historic lab would ruin it. Definitely worth one visit, perhaps not two.
